Question First EMDR session. Kinda scared. - July 27th 2010, 03:29 AM

I've been going to therapy for awhile now. last session my therapist handed me a paper about EMDR. She said that she wants to try it next week on our session. I'm a little scared and nervous. It looks wierd and confusing. From what I've seen, it puts the client through a lot of emotional trauma while remembering the event trying to be resolved. I don't know if I'm ready for that. I'm also a little skeptical. I don't see how it could work. It seems like some junk some random person came up with to make some money.
I just would like some people to share what their thoughts are about EMDR. Does it work? Is it scary? What would a session be like?
Thanks for the help! =)

Hi Dani,

Personally I haven't had EMDR so unfortunately, I can't give you a personal opinion or first hand account of the therapy. There are several websites out there that do have information on EMDR and if you type it in a search engine, I'm sure you'll get thousands of results and more information.

I can understand that the process may be a little scary and that you may be nervous about it. I think that's natural for any type of therapy, Dani. However, if you don't know if you're ready for EMDR then that is something that you can discuss with your therapist. You shouldn't have to go through anything that you're not sure of. There is no rush and you could always try out EMDR at a later date when you feel more informed.

Of course, any therapy can potentially be traumatic. Talking and reliving negative memories can be extremely hard for anyone. However, sometimes that's what we have to do in order to start to recover or to work through our thoughts and feelings. There's nothing to lose with trying a new therapy, Dani, and it could be really helpful to you.

I'd suggest that you talk to your therapist about EMDR and try and get some more information about the sessions, in order for you to become more understanding of the idea. You will also be able to ask your therapist any questions that you may have.

Good luck.
