Stray Dog Syndrom - August 23rd 2010, 02:59 AM

Ok, so i was wondering if anyone knew a website i could find information of Stray Dpg sydrom on. My mom (who studied a lot of phsyc in college) told me tonight she thinks i have this. She told me this after a breakdown, telling me i have a big heart and am very compassionate so broken people are drawn to me. She says i care too much and take in 'strays' and try and fix them. Sorry, kind of babbled. So if you know anything about this please tell me. Thankies

"My ship went down
In a sea of sound
When I woke up alone
I had everything
A hand full of moments
I wished I could change
and a tounge like a nightmare
That cut like a blade
In a city of fools
I was careful and cool
but they tore me apart like a hurricane
A hand full of moments
I wished I could change
but I was carried away

Give me therapy
I'm a walking travesty
But I'm smiling on everything
Therapy you were never a friend to me
and you can keep all your misery"

Stray Dog Syndrome is not an officially recognized psychological disorder according to the American Psychological Association. In spite of this, it sounds like a personality trait (versus a personality disorder).

There is nothing wrong with an individual wanting to help others improve. This is where a good pool of the psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and social workers come from. However, if you feel it is making a marked negative impact upon your life (which would be the clinical indicator that tips a trait into a disorder) then I would suggest talking to a professional about it (such as a therapist).

i'm the same way. i take the weight that oother people carry around and put it on my own shoulders. this year it started to affect me at school because all i was thinking about was other people. does that sound kiiind of similar to you? for me it just took a little time and i got used to the problems other people were facing, and i understood that i had to focus on other things. now its a little easier, but i'm still the same way a bit.

@Someoneoutthere : Yeah that sounds simular to me. I take on the weight of others and trying and do anything to help them.

@Silver : I might be going to see a theropist about it, my parents are not sure about it. Right now i am trying to focus on myself right now instead of everyone else which is really hard for me to do, especially with rumors my best guy friend was doing crystal meth. I am just taking it one day at a time right now.

Focusing on yourself is a good thing. I remember trying to help all my friends in high school, at a personal cost to myself. It was not sustainable.

You may find upon focusing on yourself that you still have a desire to help others. You should continue to nurture it. The key difference between that and an issue is knowing how far your help can extend while having it remain physically and emotionally healthy for yourself. You can help others without having to take on the weight of their problems. In that way you can be a compassionate person and help others without hurting yourself.

This website is a very good way to exercise your skills in understanding and compassion in a healthy way.
