Paranoia/Fear can't sleep - September 22nd 2010, 09:15 AM

I am not certain where this should go, but I'm assuming this kind of falls under a mental health topic.

For the last couple years I have had a hard time sleeping. I am constantly paranoid and afraid of the dark. I put myself in a state that I can't come back from, it keeps me up at all hours of the night, I generally fall asleep around 7am (when the light hits) and then I fall asleep. It's difficult because when I have someone to talk to, it eases me. No one is up and about when I am.

It is seriously starting to effect my day to day life and I want to be able to fall asleep normally again. My boyfriend has a hard time sleeping, too, because when he wants me to stay in bed with him I need A. a light on or B. a show on to help me focus on something else, generally I prefer both. He can't sleep and I know it also effects him.

I can't enjoy movies or conversations that involve anything that may seem frightening to me, I start to panic and become paranoid about the topic.

I am always scared of dying. That for some reason is my main concern. I don't know how to be okay at night. During the day I am fine and am able to sleep, but at nigh it is almost impossible.

My boyfriends mom suggested I count to 300 in my head before I give up, to see if that helps, but my mind races so heavily during the night it wont work.

Anyone else have this issue? Anyone have any ideas? I know it's a dumb issue to have, but it's something I can't help.

Also, sleeping pills are not an option for me.

Thanks for reading,
Mel
