Is the way I think normal? - November 3rd 2010, 06:35 PM

I don't know how we got on the subject but me and my sister and mum were talking about the way we think. They were saying they think in images or subconsciously. I tend to think in words :/ Like when I think about something it's like I'm talking to myself in my mind. I also think in images but it's mostly words. Is that normal?

I do that most of the time. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, though.

I always talk to myself in my head. Like, I make bets with myself, and work my brain a certain way. I don't think it's right, but it's me,

I tend to think in words... I've been teaching myself to not think in words, see if I can make myself think faster, but it's ended up in this strange situation where I have to sort of stop and kind of meditate about five times a day to let my conscious thoughts catch up with my unconscious ones.... but yeah, I'd say that sounds pretty normal.

It's no surprise that you'll soon forget about me

Thank God for that I probably think slower due to this also but I've never really thought of thinking another way. It's just the way I am.

I talk to myself in my head. Like I'm conversing with myself.
It's always been the way I've thought. I don't think through images much.

I'm almost constantly talking to myself in my head. I don't think it's uncommon.

I think using words and images, but mostly like I'm talking to myself. :L

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to think, really. Just whatever is right for you is right for you. Everyone's different.

Maybe your mum and sister are the weird ones for thinking in images!

i dont know but that sounds like its very normal. i think in images and i never thought of someone thinking in other ways but it sounds perfectly fine. every one is different, right? so it makes sence that everyone thinks in different ways. i do conversate with myself like other people were saying but when im really thinking or trying to remember something, i see in images. this is a very interesting topic. i never really thought of it before.

I think almost entirely in images -- even when I'm trying to remember a word or name. I'm generally unable to remember conversations, lectures, etc. and am a terrible storyteller, but my "pictorial" and spatial memory is quite good. For example, I have no idea what I ate for dinner last Wednesday, but I could draw a floor plan of the house my roommate and I toured on Friday. My memory also improves much more than the average person's with "cues," visual, auditory or otherwise.

My textbook for psychology just had a whole section on this! Human beings think in both images and words. It depends on what exactly we're thinking about and why we're thinking about it. So either one is just fine!

I think more in images with casual or fun things. I think more in words with serious matters.

Youíre the diamonds, youíre the pearls
Letís make a new tomorrow
Come on girls, come on boys
Itís your future, itís your choice
And your weapon is your voice

I doubt you're losing it. If you are, then so am I.
Everyone knows I talk to myself on a regular basis.
But we covered something in Mental Health at college. Like, most people have a voice in their head, and it's their own voice. Say you were going to catch a bus, you'd be saying to yourself inside your head 'Right, I'm going to go to X to get the number whatever bus and if I get of at Y then I can probably walk to Z from there.' Does that make sense? We plan things in our heads by telling ourselves what we're going to do.
But, some people don't have that voice. Some people who are deaf/mute don't have it and there are studies going into whether or not people who commit mass murder for no reason at all have that voice. It's actually kinda interesting.
But no, you're not alone.

i think both ways, images and talking to myself. i might be weird fr my own way of thinking but you're certainly not. you need to develop that tiny person in yourself to talk to if there's no one else out there. that helps me.

i didn't think there were ever people with mute thoughts though.
if we wouldn't have a voice inside ourselves, that would mean, possibly, that we don't even think. you can't use your brain otherwise. i do agree...how do we plan, gain hope, become happy/sad/mad/moody etc...it's all in thoughts. switching back - you won't know what you're thinking if your mind doesn't create images or tells you something. the actual voice thing turns out to be confusing but we all need it at some point.
