Question What is going on?? - November 24th 2010, 08:37 PM

Hi all!

I've... just been having a hard time recently. I can't motivate myself to do daily tasks, such as schoolwork (I attend virtual school) and my anxiety has burst through the roof. My testing anxiety is particularly terrible. I'm finding that when I am reading something that does not overly interest me (textbooks) I end up daydreaming! I don't know if it's just a way my body deals with eye fatigue (I have a very, very rare visual impairment, but do have a good amount of vision) or something else...

I've tried talking to my parents; my mom listens but doesn't offer advice and my dad thinks I overreact.

Are these habits or is something else going on?

Having trouble concentrating is actually a symptom of anxiety, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause. I too have been taking distance education courses for a number of years as my anxiety has been too bad for me to go to school. I find that I really need to make a schedule for myself and break assignments down. For example, if I have a bunch of reading to do then I'll break in down into five or ten page increments. Then when I'm done I get up and walk around my house (go to the bathroom or to get a drink) and then continue. I think it's really common for distance education students to get distracted and it's even harder with anxiety! Have you been doing anything to counteract the anxiety?

There are many things you can do to improve your concentration! When you find your mind wandering, for example, simply bring yourself back into your task. Refocus. This may sound unimportant, but it is easy to start fretting about why your mind races so. Daydreaming is normal! Just make sure to bring yourself back into whatever you need to get done. Also, it really helps a lot to set out a time to daydream! Give yourself maybe half an hour a day to think and daydream. Have a specific time for it, then try to be done with it. When you get side-tracked, just remember you have time set out for that later.

Your surroundings may make a difference as well. Try to find a place with good lighting, sit at a desk or table if possible. Sitting up straight, and a background music will help you as well. You probably want to stay away from music with lyrics that will distract you! White noise however is super helpful!

If you really believe something is wrong, like your anxiety affecting your concentration, ask your parents to visit your doctor! Especially if it is starting to negatively affect your life and school work. There is never harm in reaching out for help. <3 I hope those tips help a bit! They aren't much, but with practice and time, they can make a considerable difference! <3

I myself suffer from anxiety and I can definately relate to lack of concentration. It might be worth going and asking someone with alot of knowledge what their advice would be

You could have depression talk to your doctor. Maybe look into seeing a therapist that you can talk to they will understand you.
