Bipolar Meds? - December 6th 2010, 03:54 AM

Okay, well my psych team are looking at bipolar as a diagnosis;
I must say in most ways I agree with them and it feels like a better fit then what I've had mentioned before..
Anyway. Before I get completely off track..
I wondered what kinda meds other people with it have found useful,
I'm rapid-cycling, I don't know if that makes a difference to the meds..
also.. I'd REALLY like to not gain an excessive amount of weight if I can help it.. Plus how long did it take people to be diagnosed once it was something there thinking about/looking at as an option..
I'm talking nonsense so I'll stop now.
Thanks in advance.
Steph

Re: Bipolar Meds? - December 6th 2010, 12:36 PM

I think from the moment it was mentioned to the moment I actually started treatment was over 6 months, but I had a horrible doctor at first.
Anyways, medication. EVERYONE is different. Because a medication works for me or my friend doesn't mean it will do anything for you. That goes for side effects too, because I gained weight or a medication made me sleepy doesn't mean you will.

Most people start with depakote or lithium for bipolar buy there are many other medications to choose from. I would do research to prepare for your next appointment and don't be afraid to approach your doctor with a list of questions or even suggestions. It's always important to take an active role in your treatment plan.
I myself am on a combination of lithium and gabapentin. I've tried a lot of other medication before I found the one that worked with me.

I hope things work out for you.
