Concerned about my friend. - December 30th 2010, 12:09 PM

Hey everyone, need some help with this, like soon-ish.

My friend, he's really beginning to worry me lately, with the way he acts and some of the things he does.
He's been on cocaine, cannabis, and all sorts of pills since he was about 15, he's now 23. Which has REALLY fucked him up, he keeps telling me he's off the drugs, then we meet up and it's so obvious he's been on them. He tells his friends stupid things that are blatantly untrue. He just lies constantly, it's beginning to become such a huge problem. But the main thing he lies about is drugs.
Also,
He told me he was hearing voices a while back, but he got it all sorted, but now I see him speaking to himself, not all the time, just on the odd occasion, it's wierd. He also told me he woke up the other night screaming and shouting and was sweating.

He is refusing to go to the doctors, as he is scared of what's wrong with him. He always bangs on about drug-induced psychosis or something like that? :l

But anyway, could any of you relate?
How could I convince him to get help?

I think the voices are from the drugs and I think as long as he keeps doing the drugs, he will hear voices and other things will happen to him as well. I think you should def. sit him down and talk to him about whats been going on. Tell him that you are scared for him and want him to be happy and well. Tell him the drugs will not make his life better, only make it more complicated. Tell him how it has been making you feel. If he is a true friend, it will just take that much to realise something must be done. He may be scared but convince him that getting help is the best thing that can be done and he will thank you for it someday.

The problem is even if the drugs have caused the possible psychosis, they can also in some ways block it out.. like if your feeling paranoid and hearing voices, then getting high can block the paranoia and voices/or make it worse, make you more paranoid and even worse upset the voices. Unfortuently just because you stop the drugs does not mean the psychotic symptoms will disappear. Often you have to have psychiatric medication to try and re-organise the chemical levels in the brain before they can be got rid of. In terms of getting him to agree to help I think your best bet is to keep talking to him, ensure he knows how worried you are and that you care. Find someone that he can trust to talk to.. maybe offer to go with him to the Drs?
Due to his age it could be problematic unless he's a little willing.
Hopefully something can help.
Good Luck
