Fear - January 3rd 2011, 12:28 AM

I have a fear of people throwing up (emetophobia) is really what it is and I've had this phobia since I was probably 9 years old. I deal with it a whole lot better than I did years ago, but I do still have my moments when it takes over and I have to leave the room if I even hear that someone feels sick. It's mainly with kids because I know they can get sick wherever just because they aren't very sure when they will get sick. This phobia has also made me wonder how I will handle having a child because I do want children. I am scared that I wont be able to take care of the child when he/she is sick. I constantly question whether or not I should have kids and it bothers me because the only reason I question it is because of this stupid phobia of mine. Any advice on how to get over this phobia because it has caused me so much stress and anxiety for years and I am so sick of it.

I think you should probably seek therapy with someone who is experienced in anxiety disorders to help you work through your phobia.

Phobias may seem insurmountable, but you really can overcome them, or make them more manageable. It'll take work, and it might be hard, but I know you can do this. You've got a good grip on your understanding of your phobia, and that's the first step.

Keep at it!

I can't speak from personal experience since I've never had a phobia, but I've read literally tons of medical literature about it.

There are some pretty creative, ingenious, and just downright impressive (not to mention effective!) ways to treat phobias today. Talk to your doctor and tell him that you have this problem. Ask him to recommend a specialist that can help you with your phobia.

The results aren't usually instant. But give the therapy time, and almost all the time it's extremely effective.

Like Dzio said, you know what you're up against, so you have an edge over it already. Knowing what you're fighting against is the most important step in overcoming it. You can do this. I believe in you.

"Want to know a secret?

You are beautiful.

Black, white, gay, straight, bisexual. Whether you are smart or quiet or impossibly in love with your best friend, someone out there cherishes your smile and gets butterflies when you walk into a room.

Someone out there can't stop thinking about you. You Are Beautiful. Don't ever believe differently."
