first counseling appt. - January 27th 2011, 03:25 AM

So I'm really nervous about going to see a counselor for the first time. I've been feeling depressed for about a year and have been cutting myself.
I don't know what to expect when I talk to the counselor.
does anyone know what it will be like?

*hugs* its okay. It will really help you. I know it can be kinda scary and intimidating but after a little while, it wont be bad at all. Remember the councelers are there to help you. Tell them whatever you need to get off your chest and they will try their best to get you the help you need.

I have been more times than I can count. Counselors are very nice and just want to help you. My frist time I had to have an evaluation, but my first time with my counselor, she mostly just asked some questions making sure I felt okay. They listen pretty well and ask you questions to make you think, questions that you never really thought about. They help you develop coping strategies too, they are there to help you. They became counselors for a reason, because they WANT to help. Sometimes you may come across one that you don't really like, but if that happens, you can always find another one, there are a lot out there. Finding one you connect with is important.

You don't have to open up with everything on your first visit if you don't want to. Take things at your own pace and say what you want and feel comfortable with. Try to explain anything you think is important and need help with. Everything will be okay.
