I'm not entirely sure because I've never seen a psychologist, but I do believe they will try to understand how your mind works and try to help you understand any issues or problems you're having,

Where'as Therapists try to talk the issues or problems through, and psychiatrists try to give you medication to help you through.

But yeah, the psychologist will probably just ask you some questions and try and understand were you're coming from. It is scary to see someone in the beginning but after the first visit you'll ask yourself was it really as bad as you thought.

If you want to ask the psychologist something in particular you have a month to write down some questions.

If you want to know anymore feel free to PM me, although I feel someone else could give you a more detailed answer.

Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior and can help you become better able to cope with things. There are many different types of psychologists, some are specialised, i'd assume that you're going to see a professional who has trained in clinical and/or counselling psychology.
Psychologists can perform intelligence, performance, personality, and aptitude tests and usually gain information from their client/patient through surveys, questionnaires, interviews, observation, and clinical studies.
It's great that you're going to see a psychologist, they are professionals which will be able to help you with the situation you're needing a bit of help or advice with right now and will be able to help you as much as they can. If you're still unsure of their 'function' then feel free to question them, they should be able to answer any questions you have concerning them. I hope this helps, and well done for getting help!

Do you know why you are seeing them? Are your parents making you go?

I haven't been to a psychologist since I was yea high but I find psychologists amazing people. Over here it seems like "therapist" is just a catch-all phrase for people who help others with their lives, while to be a "psychologist" you have to hold a university degree. Think "builder" vs "engineer". It shouldn't be much more different from your therapist though.

Psychologists will talk over your problems with you, and try to find strategies to help you improve things. As Stephanie said, they can be specialised in different areas and it might be helpful if you ask your psychologist about what they do and how they approach sessions, because part of that comes down to the individual. They can try to help you understand your behaviour and feelings and to try and find ways to overcome the problems you're facing.

The following website gives a clear summary of what a psychologist does and how that differs from other professionals. The training aspect they mention is not accurate for the UK but the job roles are largely the same: http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Differen...nd-a-Counselor

I hope that helps clarify things for you.
