DBT. - April 8th 2011, 03:56 PM

So my counsellor if referring me to a support group which is two hours every week. It's so I can have DBT because she isn't trained and the people running it are. I have no idea what DBT is though. I am guessing it's like CBT? Any one know anything about it? Anyone had it? If so did it help?

All I know is that its suppose to help my self haring and my thoughts etc.

Hey Jessie,

As far as I know, DBT and CBT are very similar, but I don't know a lot about the differences. My psychiatrist explained it, but honestly, I don't remember a lot about it.

Is there any way you could ask your counselor?

We actually just learned about this yesterday in my counseling class. DBT stands for dialectical behavioral Therapy. The main idea is that problems are caused by emotional dysregulation. According to my text book it helps people understand how attempting to avoid strong emotions, for example self-harming, actually make the emotions worse. It typically runs for a year although this depends and the main componants are individual and group therapy and phone consults with your individual therapist. The person who came up with it started as a strict behaviorist so there is a major behavioral componant to it.

Hey jessie,

I have done DBT in the past and it was actually really helpful. I think DBT is more complex than CBT. DBT looks at how you can manage difficult emotions and they teach you lots of different coping strategies to manage distressing feelings rather than turning to negative ones such as self harm. I think you will find it helpful so you should give it a go.

DBT is a lot more complicated than CBT. It teaches you skills to use to help regualte and tolerate your emotions. It also helps with being effective in your relationships to others. There's so much to DBT I really don't know how to explain it all.
