Cyclothymia vs. Rapid Cycling Bipolar - July 17th 2011, 02:39 PM

Is there a difference between the two? I've been under the impression that cyclothymia is less severe than bipolar disorder, whereas rapid cycling has the same intensity as bipolar 1/2 but with the same frequency as cyclothymia.

when you love and laugh abundantly you live a beautiful life.

Cyclothymia doesn't mean you cycle often. Cyclothymia is just cycling between hypomania and dysthymia. Dysthymia is just a milder longer lasting version of depression in fact if you look up dysthymia you'll see the episodes often last years (I'm not sure if that's the case in dysthymia too).
Rapid cycling bipolar 1 or 2 just means the person has 4 or more episodes a year.
