I'm S.A.D. - August 27th 2011, 03:16 PM

God I hate the acronym for seasonal affective disorder. For me, it's not just the "winter blues," my prefrontal cortex actually "hibernates" during the winter. I can't focus on anything, can't speak full sentences, can't study, work, etc. Time passes incredibly slowly, I can't sleep at all (went 3 days with no sleep once last winter). And it's gone by May. Anyone else have something this severe? What do you do for it? Light boxes, Vit. D, drugs?

I'm sorry to hear that you go through this. I honestly don't have have it and I am sorry you do. I don't think anyone should have to go through that. But if you have been medically diagnosed with this, isn't there something that your doctor can prescribe or suggest?

That pretty much sounds like S.A.D., which I do not have.

However, as you said, Vitamin D, that could help. Usually, people get Vitamin D from the sun, and lacking that can cause depressed feelings in someone who already has a form of Depression, which Seasonal Affective Disorder is.

But, before starting ANY pills, even if it's vitamins, you should consult a doctor.

Yeah Vit. D's pretty harmless, no contraindications really. Some others (e.g. St. John's Wort) can do you in if you combine them with the wrong drugs. Generally a good idea to ask the Doc though! I'm thinking a stimulant (ProVigil, Adderall, Ritalin, etc.) may help, will talk to the shrink about it. Thanks!
