Hallucinations? I'm really scared. - November 1st 2011, 08:56 PM

Okay, this is copy and pasted from my blog, but I need advice. I'm spooked out, I don't know what's going on.

Okay, I'm really really scared.

I was walking home from school today, and at the end of my road, I saw my nan driving past (going out of our road) with my brother and dog in the back of their car. So I waved, and they waved back.

I was on my phone, and then when I got to my house (about 30 seconds later) the car was in our driveway, and my nan, brother and dog were all inside. Thinking that maybe they'd forgotten something, or decided not to go out, or whatever, I asked where they had been, and they went "What?"

I said, "I just saw you in the car, where were you going?"

My nan said, "We've not used the car since I went to the shops this morning..."

And I said, "No, I definitely saw you, Dan and Charlie in the car about 2 minutes ago."

Then my grampa said, "Kate, I promise you, nobody has used the car since 11 o clock this morning."

It wasn't even just someone that looked like them, because we live in a cul-de-sac, and nobody else owns a gold car. PLUS I just saw my nan at first and thought "That can't be right, where's she going?" but then saw by brother and dog in the back and I was like oh...

AND, thinking about it, my nan was sat on the left (passenger) side of the car, but driving. In England, the driver's seat is on the right. So wtf? It was so real... I literally waved at them.

Plus, for months now, I've been hearing people say my name. Sometimes it's angry, or scared, sometimes it's just a normal voice, sometimes they're crying, excited, happy. They don't tell me to DO anything. They don't really speak to me. It's just my name.

What the hell is this? It's so scary. So so scary.

Hey there, Kate!

We all have weird experiences like those from time to time. If it was just a one-time deal, I'd tell you it's nothing to be concerned about. Since you've been hearing your name for a few months, though, there may be something else going on.

Before you jump to the worst-case scenario and get a referral to a psychological professional, though, can you think of anything that may have caused these hallucinations? Have you been eating/sleeping well? Are you under a significant amount of stress? Are you taking any medications/substances (prescription or non-prescription, legal or illegal, properly or improperly) that could be causing these hallucinations?

I've been eating fine, sleeping alright (at least 8 hours a night,) no drugs of any sort.

I'm under a bit of stress from school, stress from the world to be perfect. But it's not that bad.

I don't know. Maybe I just want a diagnosis to solve all of my problems for me.

Well, considering the incident with the car was you seeing a normal activity, that probably isn't something to be overly concerned about. I mean, have they driven by you before?

The voices, however... If they're just saying your name, well, are you used to people in your house calling your name?

As Psy said, stress could explain it. Basically, anything that happens that isn't overly abnormal (like you said, the voices aren't telling you to do things, and the hallucination seems relatively harmless) can be explained by "normal" reasoning, i.e. stress, hormonal imbalance (you ARE a teenager, so any professional would consider this before considering a serious mental illness), or even your mind playing tricks.

The fact that you mentioned how you feel you might be looking for a diagnosis to "solve your problems" is concerning in itself. Because of this, well, your mind could even be over-exaggerating things. I'm not saying you're making this up or anything, but I am saying that the power of suggestion *could* be at play here.

The best thing you can do about this (in my opinion, anyways) would be to see a counselor at school, if you can. Perhaps talking to somebody a bit more "professional" about this will not only help you make sense of it, but also help you with finding ways to cope.
