Bipolar Disorder - November 26th 2011, 04:46 AM

Ok... So I'm 14 and I've been reading about bipolar disorder after an older friend of mine mentioned that I've been showing symptoms of it. I know alot of times it could just be hormones but when I read about it... I seemed to be showing alot of the symptoms found in teens. I've tried to commit suicide twice being stopped both times. I have severe mood swings which I know is normal with hormones but I don't think suicidal thoughts are normal to have alot.... I was just wondering if I should go to a doctor or just ignore it.
Thanks.

If you think there's a chance that you have bipolar disorder, see a professional. Letting it go untreated could prove to be dangerous later on in life. Seeing a doctor will clear up whatever concerns you may have. If you aren't diagnosed as a bipolar individual, then you can relax, knowing that it's simply hormones. If you are diagnosed, the doctor will be able to send you to a psychiatrist who can prescribe you with proper medication and offer support.
Take care,
Sammi.

Even if you start to even FEEL like you may be bipolar, you should really consult with a doctor before your thoughts swerve out of control. Its better to know than to wonder all the time. I would see a doctor as soon as possible.

Well, Bipolar Disorder is more complicated than most people understand. I'm not sure if I can even start to suggest you could possibly have it, considering you haven't given any hints towards such.

However, you said you've had suicide attempts, which ISN'T normal. This can be associated with Depression, other mental health issues, or even just overactive hormonal issues. You should probably talk to your family doctor about this, considering you'd have to see them to see a professional for your mental health anyways.

Thanks, I'm gonna talk to someone about it and hopefully I can see a doctor. I dontwant to go into really specific details but yeah I have very severe mood swings. I might be happy for a week and then the next week I might want to kill myself. I tend to be depressed most of the time but then I'll have a random period where I don't get alot of sleep because I'm too hyper or excited. I'll go to a Professional as soon as possible to figure out what's going on. Thanks.

Yeah, being "Happy" isn't enough for a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis, neither is unstable sleeping and moods in a 14-year-old.

Let's put it this way. For a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder in somebody under 18, the symptoms have to be relatively extreme, so they can cross "Normal Teenage Hormones" off the list. The symptoms of Mania have to be more extreme than any Depression symptoms for them to even consider the diagnosis.

So, I'm going to assume that, most likely, they won't diagnose you with Bipolar Disorder. However, hopefully you can find a therapist to see about the suicidal feelings you occasionally have.
