Psychiatrist is basing his diagnoses wrong.....guys I need your advice so please help :) - March 24th 2009, 11:55 PM

Ok so, yesterday I went to my third appointment with my pyschiatrist and everytime I tell him everything thats wrong and how I am feeling, he wants to diagnose me bipolar. Like I have the whole mind racing, hot-tempered, impulsive and the deep depression to the point where I wanna kill myself. Well in order to put me on another medication, he has to talk to my mom. Whenever he goes to talk to her, he asks her if she notices anything. And my mom who I only see for like 2 hours a day, sometimes not at all, and weekends when she pisses me off says "I only see her depressed and sleeping or having an attitude with everyone. It must be in school." So, both times he wouldnt diagnose me. So, he says to me "Well when you feel like your in a mania attack come see me." like he didnt believe me. and my mom started laughing at me in the car after and shes like "extra giddy. I never see you like that."
IDK what to do. Cuz I can feel what I have isnt just depression cuz sometimes it feels like I have ADHD and I cant control it. Everyone has to always imply that unless I do something really drastic, no one will listen.

What do I do?

Have you given him that description? Saying something along the lines of your "depression" seems to be like ADHD except mood-based?
Also, does he know how much you see/talk to your mom? If not then he should.
Finally, say to him that you will write down your emotions and how you feel and what happens for a day (a normal school day) and give it to him. Promise to be totally honest. Seeing into your day some should help your doctor diagnose you.

I'd do what he says, although I've never heard of a decent psychiatrist referring to mania as a sort of attack, usually mania is pretty obvious to a psychiatrist if they're looking for it, and if he's having enough doubt to base his decision on what your mom says (assuming he knows how little you actually see her) is kind of strange.
Explain to him everything you said here if you haven't already, and then just do what he said, if you're feeling manic at all call him, although that's kind of ridiculous since a good portion of people are unaware that something is wrong until it's over.

The only things you can really do are what your doctor said, and explain all this to him.
Also, like KoKoEm suggested, I'd journal your moods, that way you can just show him when he asks how you've been feeling, and you won't miss it when you're manic. Write down everything, even if it doesn't seem out of the ordinary to you, your amount of energy, motivation, mood from 1-10, goals for the day, etc.

I think it's pretty stupid for him to want you to call him when you're having a manic phase. Tell the doctor how much your mother sees you, as he may assume she is in contact with you quite a lot, which is what the average mother would be. Ideally, the doctor wants your opinion and others in order to get a multidimensional idea. Perhaps a friend(s) from school who have seen you depressed and manic, and are willing to tell?

The reason why doctors tend to want to interview others around you is a) are the stories roughly similar, b) your interpersonal relations and how others perceive you. Those are crucial in formulating a diagnosis and you cannot accurately tell him those.

well if all the persuading and explaining and describing doesn't work, tell him you want a second opinion and see another doc. any reasonable psychiatrist should respond to the way YOU describe your emotions, and not take the word of others completely over yours. nor should they assume what they see you like in their office is an accurate sample of your overall behavior and emotional state. that's just naive. this shrink of yours makes me mad....
