My parents won't let me go see a therapist or a counselor... -
January 7th 2012, 05:35 AM
I've been depressed and feeling very uneasy and insane for quite a while, and both my parents know. However they do not want to send me to a therapist or a counselor because they believe that this will not help me at all and the only way is to help your own self. However, since I've gone mad, I cannot "help myself." I need some other help.
How do I convince them?

I would maybe talk to a School Counselor (they are free). If they believe you need more help and guidance tell them to call your parents (trust me they will). Then your parents should realize whats going on and may change there mind about this. Other than that you can goggle 'how to calm down' or 'steps to calm down' or 'steps to overcome depression' and you should get alot of info and tips to help you!
Best wishes, Chris Chris Jackson

The school counselor is your best option. As Jack said they will tell your parents if they believe you need outside help, and if they decide that you don't, your parents don't have to know, in most cases anyway, there are certain things that they would be required to tell them. Another thing to try is to explain to your parents that even when you see a professional you are still doing the work and helping yourself, the professional is there to guide you through it. I like to say that professionals don't "fix" or save people, they help them fix or save themselves. If you decide to go to your school counselor, they can also help you explain this.

Hi there.
I'm sorry your parents seem to be reluctant to get you any help but I am glad you recognized you do need support, that's really positive. I agree with what has already been said. Trying see the school counselor. If you don't have a counselor (I know my school doesn't!) then try seeing the school nurse. They're trained to deal with things like this and they are there to help people like yourself. You won't need your parents permission to see them and it will be free! And as said, if they are concerned about you and feel you need support at home, the chances are high that they will ring your parents themselves to ensure you get the right help and support. I also just wanted to make sure you know there are things you can do to help you. Getting help is one, so well done! Also try keep yourself busy and distracted when you're feeling really bad or even ring a helpline. Perhaps treat yourself every day to praise you for getting through that day, even if it's just having a nice bubble bath or something like that. Also, try and keep active and carry on socilaising with others. Plan to go out with friends to help yourself have a good time! I hope this helps.
