I want to see a therapist? -
January 9th 2012, 11:29 PM
Im 14 and my thoughts of suicide and my self harm have been getting worse. I want to see a therapist or counselor without my parents finding out because they will most likely kick me out. I know you might think that that sounds stupid, but trsut me, I know my parents. The school counselor is useless; she just wants to tell my parents at well. I need a way to get through this oart of my life without my parents finding out... Advice?

Your school guidance counselor is the first place you should try. It's free and they don't have to tell your parents unless they believe you're a danger to yourself. Since you're under 18, they'll have to know and give consent for a professional to treat you.

I'm the same way, so I know what you're going through. Like Katie said, your school counselor is your best bet. Counselors are under the strictest rules -- if she took what you said outside of her office without your consent, she could lose her license.

Is there more than 1 school counselor at the school? You could try to meet up with a different one to get some help. They might even be able to offer suggestions about therapy. I just signed an agreement for my therapist and I saw that a guardian does need to sign if you're under 18.
