Pills -
January 26th 2012, 10:32 PM
I started a new school, I had therapy before and I countinued where I left off. My therapist wants me to start on medication and it is my own choice and the school pays for it, should I? I am scared it will change everything that I have ever become or maybe it will reveal someone underneath and help me live with my life that I have now and apperaciate what I have instead of focusing on the bad things.

I think if your therapist thinks that you should, you definitely should give it a try! They are professionals and know what's best for you! I realize it's scary but it might pay off and if it doesn't work or makes you feel worse, you can always tell your therapist and they can take you off of it!
all i want is a place to call my own and mend the hearts of everyone who feels alone, woah, you know to keep your hopes up high and your head down low. <3 |

hi there. I'm a little confused. By what you have said it sounds to me like you're worried about feeling better, about things changing. The point of being in therapy and taking medication is to help you feel better, to get out of this. And that's a home thing because you can start to feel better than you do now. Jessie

Medication doesn't change who you are, if it does then it's not working properly. The one and only point of medication is to control symptoms assosiated with some sort of disorder or abnormality. Say you're depressed, the only thing the medication should and would do is to make it easier for you to work through your depression, it won't do the work for you but it can be a very useful tool to help people recover.

If your therapist thinks it's a good idea i think you should give it a go. If you don't like the outcome you can always stop taking them, but give them a chance first.

How long have you been with this therapist and what are his/her credentials? I only ask because, in my experience, "student-health center" nurse practitioners seem to be overeager about prescribing SSRI antidepressants. Do *you* feel you need to be on meds? Contrary to what Pfizer would have you believe, they're not for everyone, and they don't turn you into a happy bouncing blob of mascarpone cheese either...
PM me if you want to talk

She is part of the student center thing on campus and since the semester started so 3 weeks. They do not have her on the website yet so I honestly have no idea about that but there is some things on her wall, and thinking about what has happened through out the years I think it is wise to maybe give it a try and I can just stop taking them if I do not like it so I will give it a try.

So first things first - I would find out what her credentials are. "Some things on her wall" doesn't mean she can prescribe medication. Getting a diploma isn't the same thing as receiving additional training and passing the test(s) for licensure.
Secondly, I'd like to point out that, should you decide to stop taking a particular medication, it would be best to see your therapist first (assuming she has the proper credentials to even be considered a "therapist"). Tell her what's going on, and discuss other options. Don't stop taking the medication without discussing everything with her first - sometimes, there can be some nasty side effects from going "cold turkey" while on medication. Also, just because one kind of medication doesn't work doesn't mean that another kind of medication won't work, too. There are literally dozens upon dozens of anti-depressants, for example, so just because one doesn't work doesn't mean that the many others won't work, too. =) I wish you all the best. Hey there. I just wanted to wish you luck for when you see the psychiatrist. I know these things can be hard but you can do it. Try and go in with am open mind. Think about any issues you want to discuss or any questions you want to ask. I hope that it goes well for you. Jessie.
