Question ADHD IS SCREWING MY LIFE UP! - February 21st 2012, 07:45 PM

i'm currently attending college and training to get into the military.
i'm doing terrible in school. i just can't pay attention no matter how hard i try. i can't take any meds for it because the recruiter says i cannot be on any meds for at least a year before i can join.
without the meds, i bomb at school.
with meds, i do better in school but i cant get into the military....

and, before anyone thinks to suggest "just listen harder, don't think as much"......THAT DOESNT HELP! the only people who can truly understand what i'm going through are those who have the same problem.

Only thing I can think of is maybe look for a support group or therapist or something that might be able to give you help on how to control it without medication.

Well, you could try talking to the Disability department about getting some special accommodations, such as a possible alternative study area, possibly somebody to help you one-on-one, whatever you could think of to make studying easier. Even if you just want to work in a quiet room with an MP3 player on, to make studying easier.

I've got ADHD as-well. I found that as time went by It got easier to manage without the meds for ADHD. I was on ritalin then got moved to concerta. Now I don't take anything for it. I've found that having something to fiddle with whilst I was at college worked for me, like if there was something in my hands (pen or pencil ect ) I was fine as soon as there was not anything I could fiddle with I listened to my ipod or something.

I suffer from adhd as well and i know exactly where your coming from. People can say it goes away after a while, this is more true for girls than boys however. ritalin and concerta are a lot easier to stop using compared to adderal which is what ive been on for 5 years now? Anyway one thing that seemed to help me with everything related to my adhd was getting good exercise and also eating healthy. I know it sounds stupid but laying off sugar in the morning, or stimulating music while your in your first few hours of being awake can do wonders. Also just keep telling yourself that your improving, you know like conditioning your mind.
