Question How can I tell my already anxious mom? - January 8th 2013, 10:24 PM

My mom has anxiety and often gets anxiety/panic attacks. She worries a lot about small things. How am I supposed to tell her I suffer from an eating disorder? I don't want her to be extra worried all the time. What can I do?

Hey there, I'm sorry that we haven't gotten back to you in a couple of days. The site has, unfortunately, been down quite a bit this week.

Anyhow, I think that you should write her a letter. You'll be able to control what you say, how you say it, and you can express what you're going through. If you hand it to her before you go to school, she will be able to read it and reflect on it. You can also drop little hints that you have an ED (it'd help if I knew specifically what ED you had, so I could explain more). Let her find out. That way it isn't her finding out all at once. That could help ease her anxiety. But either way, I'm extremely proud of you for wanting to talk to your mom about this. It's tough, and even more so when there is anxiety involved. If you want her to know, of course she is going to experience some anxiety. This is a big deal. But it needs to be addressed. If she knows, you'll be able to focus on recovery with some support. I think it's good to remember that anxiety attacks don't last forever. And they can be managed. Don't let this be a road block for you. <3

Thank you<3 I have more of EDNOS. Because I'm not full on anorexic, my weightt hasn't dropped below the 5th percentile aand I don't exercise obsessively. And I'm not bulimic or a binge eater. I feel like I'm just addicted to not eating. And although people tell me I'm skinny, I feel like I'm walking around with a big belly. I have a bad self image and I think I may even also have anxiety like my mom or just depressive episodes. But I'm not a doctor, Idk. I just tend to analyze it a lot. I have tried dropping hints... but before that, I downtalked eating disorders a lot, saying how serious they are but that I would never do that so that they WOULDN'T find out.
