not sure what to do - May 17th 2013, 03:53 AM

I have to gain weight this I know, I will admit it I am not healthy and I am causing myself major health issues. the problem is I don't know how to make myself eat I start to eat and then I feel like I have ate way too much so I don't eat anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions for how they motivated themselves to eat.

Hey (:

If your perception of a portion is skewed at the minute the best thing I can suggest is getting someone else to plate up your food, or buy meals already in portion sizes until you get an idea of how much you need to be eating and so on.

There aren't really any rules when it comes to eating, you eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, and for the most part this should work. If you have health problems or an eating disorder obviously this can be more complicated than that though, but this whole "intuitive eating" thing should always be the goal.

To help you gain weight, eating things high in energy, and upping portion sizes should work. Protein shakes, or supplements if you're struggling to eat enough to gain weight are a good option, too.

When I had to gain weight I was prescribed these 3 times a day, then it was reduced to 2, then 1, and I was weaned off them as my weight stabilized. They were good as not only did they provide energy and calories, they provided all the other nutrients my body needed to. There's probably other brands of these (Like fortisips? I think that's what their name is) but ensure is the one I had and the only one I really know about.

Eat meals or substantial snacks (think mini-meals) more often is the way to pack more calories into the day. Sports nutritionist and Georgia State University professor emeritus Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RD said "Try to eat six times a day, with each meal (or at least three of them) containing protein, starch, vegetable[s], and fat," Eat nuts by the handful or sprinkle them on top of soups, salads, cereal, desserts, and casseroles for added protein, fiber, healthy fat, and calories. Granola, loaded with nuts and dried fruits, is a concentrated source of nutritious calories, especially when eaten with full-fat Greek-style yogurt, which is higher in protein. Mix a spoon of ginger juice and lemon juice in a glass of water. Drink it twice a day to increase appetite.

Hey there,

I would suggest starting small and then working your way up there. Start off with some snacks and meals to at least make sure you get the calories needed. Then move up to 1 or 2 small meals a day, and keep on challenging yourself.

Something that you can do while eating is put on a good show or a good movie, this will in a way distract you and stop you from thinking about what you're eating. That way you're watching something you like as well as being healthy by eating.

I must say thought that you should never feel like you are too fat or not in good weight, because I can assure you that you are perfect just the way you are. Never let anyone try and change you.

Feel free to message me and I can help you as much as possible in being able to get your eating back on track.

Are you having a tough day or night? Then do this, place your hand over your heart. Feel that? That's called purpose. You're alive for a reason. Don't give up.
