Self-image. - June 21st 2013, 03:03 AM

As a little girl I was taught to love myself and I always have until I got into highschool. My self-image as of who I am and my outer appearance deteriorated instantly. I am entering the last year of highschool in the fall. Lots of pressure. With everything I have to do, i just want to be able to control one thing, my self-image. Its gotten so bad that I only eat one meal a day. It bothers me but again it doesn't. I'll just look better for senior pics I guess. I'm trying so hard not to fall into this cycle again. I really don't want to, this is a miserable thing to go through, and I hate myself for what I am thinking now.

Hey there,

Although you don't have a precise eating disorder, I don't think it would hurt you to talk to a professional about your self-esteem. I never did when I was your age, and I regret it, because as you get older, it only gets harder to find the money or opportunity to take care of these issues. You could see your school counselor, and see if she can refer you to somebody that you can talk to. I'd also recommend taking a break from caring about looks. Here's a list of things to try:

1) Don't wear make up for a week. Just wash your face, put on some SPF lotion, and go out. Notice how nobody notices.

2) Get rid of your full mirror in your room for a while. You can have a face mirror for your hair and quick outfit checks, but it takes away the opportunity to just criticize yourself. When you bring it back, put a sticky note on there about how awesome you are.

3) Make a list of your favorite qualities of yourself; 20 physical qualities, 20 mental. Don't focus on the negatives.

4) Socialize more. This allows you to get out of your head and into the world.

5) Accept that you will have flaws. You're going to mess up. You're gonna have a bad hair day or gain a few pounds. IT'S OKAY. You're human, and everybody has flaws. And most importantly, everybody is so worried about their own flaws that nobody will notice yours.

I hope that helps, good luck.
