Lightbulb Resources for Australians - July 17th 2013, 01:36 PM

Although with respect to the Butterfly Foundation, I have no doubt they'd chat to you regardless of where you are from, they are that awesome.

After having my disordered eating concerns dismissed by various health professionals when I desperately needed the support, it was the Butterfly Foundation who finally believed me and gave me the strength and resources I needed to start seeking help.

The Butterfly Foundation- Primarily based in NSW, they are a nationwide organization with support groups, one on one counselling, and perhaps most significantly, email and chat counselling. They're quick and supremely understanding.

EatFed in Leichardt, NSW, is a private organization that offers one to one counselling, as well as short and longer term group programs. The women who run it are absolutely lovely, very experienced, and very good at what they do. The improvements I saw in my mental wellbeing after doing just their 6 week (once a week) outpatient program were remarkable. I liked it so much I've continued on there with individual sessions - although I must say, group is great. That feeling of, no, you too? Is always a surprise and a relief.

The Northside Clinic, based in Sydney, is a private hospital with a large and extremely frequently recommended team of psychiatrists. As in, I haven't yet had the chance to visit myself, but anytime I ask for a mental health referral, I've been pointed in their direction. That being said, its like any popular health practitioner - get a generic/open referral from your GP and be prepared to wait a while. I've been referred to a psychiatrist there, but their eating disorders program was the alternative option given to me by the Butterfly Foundation along with Eatfed.

The Hollywood Hospital Clinic, based in Nedlands, WA, is another private hospital with a dedicated eating disorders program. They've recently opened a day program as well, which is great. I thought I'd put it down as I attended their mood disorders 2 week program a couple of years ago, and thought it was excellent.

Anyway, thats a start. If anyone wants names of eating disorder friendly psychologists in WA or NSW, let me know. Or just has questions in general. I'll update this post as I go along (especially as I can't currently add urls until my post count is over 10, sorry about that)
