I don't get taken seriously - February 19th 2014, 09:50 PM

I was diagnosed with ednos a couple of years ago. My eating disorder actually comes and goes. I can be perfectly fine with food then I will starve and only eat one little meal. Anyways I told my grandma that I think I should go back to the eating disorder therapist because my eating disorder is getting worse. I've started purging and I want to stop that but I'm okay with the starving. Anyways my grandma just told me she doesn't think I have an eating disorder it's just my depression and the only reason I purge is because I want to loose my weight so badly. I'm seriously WTF? She told me she wants me to get better but I'm not taken seriously. I just don't know she has never thought I had an eating disorder even when I was starving and only eating very little. I don't know why I posted this but I did.

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are

Hey Frankie,

I'm sorry you're struggling with an eating disorder, and more so that your grandma doesn't understand. It makes it more tough to go through hard times without the support of your family members. For her to pass off your relapse as "just depression and it'll go away" shows that she's insensitive toward these things. It also may show that she just doesn't want to believe that anything can be wrong with her granddaughter. I know it's hard to believe, but this may just be out of love, because she doesn't like that you're going through this and doesn't want to admit you need help.

But I could be wrong. I don't know your family dynamics, and either way, your grandma shouldn't hold you back from getting help if you feel like you need it. I'm so glad to know that you have decided to reach out for help - it shows you're mature and really ready to fix this thing! I would try writing a letter to your grandma, going in depth about what your eating disorder feels like. Sometimes you have to play the power of manipulation and just throw all your emotions at her at once. Make her realize you're not just fooling around, this isn't just some joke - you need help. Consistency is key - keep trying, stay persistent - I hope she lets you get the help you deserve.
