Question Can I be bulimic if I'm obese? - November 4th 2014, 01:35 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of eating disorders, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

So I was wondering of I could have bulimia if I am obese. I weigh about [Edited] pounds. I binge all the time. I feel as though I can't stop eating once I start. I then feel so horrible and guilty about the amount of calories I've consumed so I then purge by making myself vomit. I do this about once a day. I'm too scared to get help because what if I'm too fat to have bulimia? I have been binging and purging for about 3 to 4 years. I never purged regularly like everyday before the past 7 months. Before I would purge about twice a week but I would binge all the time.

Re: Can I be bulimic if I'm obese? - November 4th 2014, 01:51 AM

Hey there,

I want to make it clear I am not diagnosing you because I am not a professional. But,yes, you can be bulimic and be overweight. Bulimia can affect people of all weights. People with bulimia can be underweight, normal weight or overweight.

I think it would be a good idea for you to seek counseling for this so that you can work on the underlying issues behind these behaviors and work on getting to a better place. It is unhealthy to be partaking in these types of behaviors. Purging can have some serious effects on your health and can result in death.

I really hope that this helped and if you need anything please feel free to message me.

Hey (:

As said above, we can't diagnose eating disorders or anything. But to me, you're describing all the symptoms of bulimia. The guilt, the binging and the purging are all signs of bulimia, and indicators that you need help. You won't get in trouble, and trust me, you will be taken seriously, regardless of your weight, by any competent medical professional. Eating disorders don't discriminate by height, weight, eye color, birth month (although one study suggested babies born in a particular season, can't remember which, were more likely to develop an eating disorder, this is irrelevant but my head is full of irrelevant facts xD), name or favorite color. Anyone can be affected, and these illnesses are mental, not physical, in origin.

I urge you to seek help, you sound like you're really struggling right now and a lot of people here can empathize with how horrible eating disorders can be. I'm recovered now, but if you want to talk my private message box is open and I can try and help any way I can. I hope everything works out okay for you <3

Re: Can I be bulimic if I'm obese? - November 4th 2014, 02:26 PM

Hi Melanie,
Your main question ''can I be bulimic if I'm obese?'' can be interpreted in two different ways:
- ''Is it possible to be considered bulimic if I'm obese, or does it only go for skinny people?''
- ''Is it okay to be bulimic so long as I am obese?''

So, the answer to the first question is YES. Bulimia is an eating disorder that anyone can get, obese or underweight. Bulimic people are usually portrayed as skinny and anorexic, because the majority of bulimic people are anorexic, but anyone who displays the symptoms can be bulimic, regardless of their weight and body type.

The answer to the second question is NO. The Binging-Bulimic duo is dangerous for your self-estime, your mind and eventually to your body. It's dangerous for your self-estime and mind because, as you said, once you have done the deed you feel horrible and guilty. It's dangerous for your body because you are putting it through a lot of stress: your body is meant to consume just enough food to fill you (not more and more and more) and then digest that food (not vomit it back up).

If I were you I would definitely consult some kind of doctor.

I hope this helps, Good Luck!

Hey there,

I can not diagnose you because I am not a professional. Yes you can have bulimia when you are under weight, healthy weight, over weight, or obese, Bulimia doesn't discriminate because of size. I have a diagnosed eating disorder and I am obese so it does happen.

I suggest you go see a professional about this because it is really dangerous. The professional can help you get it under control and get you healthy again. I hope you get the help you need and if you need to talk you can PM/VM me anytime.

Re: Can I be bulimic if I'm obese? - November 5th 2014, 01:42 PM

I pretty much agree with what everyone else is saying. Anyone can have an eating disorder and it does not matter what size you are. I understand how it feels to be obese and contemplating whether or not there is a possibility of an eating disorder. I am obese and I believe I have an eating disorder.

We cannot diagnose you since we are not medical professionals, but we are going to help you to the best of our abilities. If you do not mind me asking, when exactly did these behaviors come about/occur? Did something in your everyday waking life happen to have caused these behaviors to occur? I think you should really see a therapist/counselor as I think it could be of some use to you as there seems to be something in your waking life that is causing you some distress and is causing these behaviors to occur.

Having an eating disorder is dangerous and even though your mind is telling you it is not dangerous, in actuality, it is dangerous.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I'll tell my therapist about my struggles.
