Smoothie instead of food - February 10th 2016, 11:00 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of eating disorders, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I honestly don't know if I'm going back to my anorexic ways or not. Whenever I'm hungry I make a smoothie it's with Greek yogurt and fruit and breeze cocunut milk. I honestly don't know if this is restricting or not. Can someone help me please.

I think it depends why and how often you're using them. If you're doing it once in awhile or even more often because you like them, but you continue to eat other meals, then it's fine. If you're making smoothies instead of eating normal meals or snacks and/or it's every time you're hungry, then that might be something to think about. Maybe limit yourself to one smoothie a day, while eating other meals and see how you feel about it.

That isn't a good meal supplement. You need protein if you want a supplement. It's okay to have a smoothie replace a meal on occasion. It's not recommended to do it more than 3 times a week. If you are very active, it's not recommended at all.

You also need a healthy-fat and a high-fiber carb for a healthy meal replacement.

Now, if you are drinking this smoothie on purpose in place of eating, then yes. This is not healthy and sounds like it is on purpose. If you do what I suggested and do some research into a healthy full-meal replacement smoothie, then you will be receiving all the nutrients you need in place of a meal. Again, it's not recommended to do this more than 3 meals a week. It can cause havoc on your digestive system switching to liquids.

You can also buy some decent meal replacement shakes in stores.

Why have you started doing the smoothies?

EDIT:
In regards to 'on purpose'. I'm so sorry. I didn't think by using those words. I do understand what an ED is. I struggle with one too. I greatly apologize. I just meant if you are doing it and know you are doing it to avoid food compared to doing it just because it sounds good.

I already have an ed. I am home alone all day for three weeks so no one is here to make sure I eat. I feel out of control and need to control something. I have two smoothies then dinner. I just can't bring myself to eat when no one is home so I thought hey at least I'm getting some calories. I am not doing this on PURPOSE I have an eating disorder. ANd the voice tells me not to eat if you think I'm doing this on purpose then you obviously don't know what an ED is.

She didn't mean anything bad by saying that you were doing it "on purpose." It might not have been the right words, but she didn't mean that you were intentionally doing it. She just meant that if you're replacing meals with smoothies consciously due to negative feelings in regards to eating, then it's probably a problem. Which, you are.

Like the others have said, you shouldn't do it more than 3x a week and doing it 2x in a day is definitely not good for you. Try to make it a goal to map out what you want to eat during the day. Even if you don't want to, it's important that you are getting nutrients. Especially if you already have an eating disorder.

Re: Smoothie instead of food - February 11th 2016, 01:43 AM

I don't think the smoothie alone is the sign; I eat smoothies too, but I usually add protein powder so it's more substantial, and it's just a food thing, you know, I think the critical thing is that you need to think about is your mentality around having smoothies instead of whatever else you could have eaten. Are you allowing yourself to have enough substance in your smoothie (e.g. protein) to feel satisfied (as in no longer hungry)? Do you have anything with it (e.g. bread)? Are you allowing yourself to have more to eat if you feel hungry a short while later? I can't really say if your ED struggles are starting to become a bigger problem for you or not. The fact that you're asking indicates it's probably not stable, but I can't say for sure. I hope that whatever it is, that you will be ok and seek help if you need it. As always, we're all here to talk if you need it.

Why are you unable to bring yourself to eat? Just don't know what make anything? Or just really can't bring yourself to eat anything?

I just can't bring myself to eat anything. and the smoothies are so good and easy. I just don't know. It's like when I'm home alone it acts up because no one is here to make me eat. Also I haven't been purging lately so I think that has something to do with it.

It sounds like the smoothies should be all right as long as you add in the protein, healthy fat, and high-fiber carb. Smoothies are delicious and easy to make. They feel great on your throat. They're easy to digest. It's almost like eating a dessert.

I definitely see the appeal. So if you can limit yourself with them, I do think they're all right. In the mean time, grabbing some lunch meat to make sandwiches is a good idea. It's usually not high in calories, fills you up, and can be healthy. Plus, they're easy to make.

Campbells makes an awesome Healthy Request Chunky line of soup. Lower sodium and calorie. Very good soups. 3 minutes in the microwave and they're done. No water needed. You could check those out too.

I'm offering the lower calorie items because they're still healthy. They're not low enough to endanger anyone's weight if eaten along with other meals.

If you ever need help with healthy recipes for them, feel free to ask me.

Smoothies can be alright to use as a meal so long as you're putting enough in them. I know a lot of people who have a big smoothie for breakfast. You could try making smoothie bowls, it's similar to a smoothie but just make sure it's thick enough to eat with a spoon and then add fun toppings such as fruit, cocoa nibs, buckwheat groats, coconut shreds, etc. Most people don't eat enough fruit in a day actually, but they are healthy and fairly substantial. I wouldn't recommend having them for two of your meals each day, though. Eating starchy foods is what will keep you full longer. Try baking some potatoes, cooking some rice, etc. Couscous is a very easy grain to cook, just add some boiling water, cover, and it's ready in five minutes. Potatoes can be boiled which is pretty hands-free.

And here you are living, despite it all.
