Um, switching EDs? - March 4th 2010, 08:56 AM

I've noticed that ever since my eating problems began, it's not uncommon for my body to switch through them. For example, it started out as EDNOS. A few months later it was strictly binge eating, which progressed into exercise bulimia over the course of a year. Now I've noticed through the fatigue brought on by such excess amounts of exercise, I'm starting cycles of binging/fasting which I've heard is another type of non-purging bulimia. I'm definitely not in control of it; I don't just wake up and say, "Hey, I think I'll try out this disorder today." It just gradually becomes something new. I'm much more accustomed to hearing stories of people stuck with one specific ED for years... I guess it just makes me feel really strange. Is this common?

Hey Cortney.

Believe it or not, most people have both Anorexia and Bulimia or so on, and this includes me. So, you are not strange, not at all.

Have you considered getting help? You don't have to struggle with this alone, and there are people who can help you regain your life back.

If you need anything, feel free to PM me.

Hey Courtney,

This is actually a lot more common than you would think. A lot of people switch between ED's, going from restricting to binging and purging. Often it just happens. It's not really a decision, it's more of a 'well I have eaten in x, so eat this and then purge' type of thing, and you just fall into that cycle. You are not strange in the least, it really is common.

It really doesn't matter what you call it, the only thing that matters is the fact that you are having problems with eating. Have you talked to anyone about it yet? If you have, you might want to mention that you feel like you switch between them, or that you feel strange. You don't have to do this alone, not at all.

If you need anything, feel free to pm me.
