Purging blood? - July 28th 2010, 06:44 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I don't know for sure but I think I might have purged a little tiny bit of blood. I mean, I don't know for sure because there wasn't a lot at all but it scared me and so now I am freaking out. I don't know if it could be because like I scratched my throat by sticking my fingers down it or if it is something worse.

Why would I be purging blood? I have been purging off and on for about a year so why is there blood all of a sudden? And I haven't been purging all that much lately 2-3 times a day at the most so why when I was purging 4-6 times did I not bleed and now I am bleeding?

I don't know what to do. If it was blood should I be worried? I go to my therapist tomorrow and I probably will tell her about this and some other stuff. I don't know what good it will do I cannot afford treatment or the hospital but at least it will be out in the open.

I don't want to die but I have to purge to cope. I know that makes me sound weak but it is the only way I can keep myself from wanting to die. Keep the pain at bay.

I don't know what to do anymore. If it was blood but it wasn't a lot at all will I be okay?

EDIT: Don't know if this actually needed a triggering label but I find things about purging blood to be triggering to me. So I thought I should put it just in case.

EDIT2: I know you cannot give me a definitive answer but some ideas about what could be the cause of it could help ease my mind?

I think you might have torn a lining in your throat. :/
It'd be best to tell your therapist about it.

There could be different reasons for the blood. You could have scratched your throat with nails like you said or it could be something more serious. I don't know for sure though. I got this from another site where a user asked the same question so hopefully it will be helpful

purging can EASILY cause internal bleeding often due to tears in the wall of the oesophagus/ somach or ulcer formation. It is very dangerous in itself and it can cause all the problems stated above plus cause lasting damage to you heart/ teeth/ throat and that isn't everything. If it is just a few bright red bits it is essentially normal as vomitting does put stress on your body as well as it possibly coming from scratches. However, if this becomes associated with pain/ the amount of blood increases/ you start coughing up blood then it is a good idea to get checked out. If you purge and something which resembles coffee granules comes up you need to be checked out straight away

I really hope you do manage to talk to your therapist about this as she can tell you if you need to see a doctor or not, your health is important so don't leave it unchecked!

Serpendity answered it. As someone who used to purge I often experienced bleeding, but you should still see a doctor. We can't be sure what is causing the bleeding only a doctor or therapist can recommend what you do or pin point where the bleeding is coming from. Please be safe and see someone as soon as you can. If you ever need someone to talk to about it I'm here for you.

I have never purged so I am not extremely knowledgable in this part but purging blood sounds quite dangerous. It could be minor but it could also be major. I would certainly get it checked out incase its something bad. Also, you may not think so but purging 2-3 times a day is a lot, and is damaging your body Hope you get better soon xx.

Okay, I purged for years and I was told this so that I knew when to go to hospital and when not to.

If the blood is bright red, then it's likely that you just scratched the back of your throat.

If the blood is very dark, clumpy, and leaves a strong metallic taste in the back of your throat then it's quite serious and may be due to internal bleeding, you should go to hospital straight away.

Obviously I'm not a doctor but that's what I was told, and the rule that I always lived by.

And as to why you would start purging blood now, well the longer you keep purging and the more frequently you purge then the more harm you're doing to your body. Scratching the back of your throat can happen any time.

I sound horrible saying this but I wish someone had said it when I was 1 year into my eating disorder -- this is your body starting to show you the physical effects of reguarly purging. It will only get worse. Next time you might pass out or have a heart attack or have internal bleeding as a result of the strain throwing up puts on your body. Please don't underestimate the physical effects just because you haven't felt them. yet.

It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around.
And PLEASE don't try and shove it down my throat.

Hey Jenna,

You've gotten some very fabulous answers here! I hope that you have talked to your doctor, or are planning on doing so; as this is not something to take lightly. I'm going to close this thread, given that you have received such a wealth of information! If anyone disagrees, send me a PM
