Epiphany - August 25th 2010, 05:51 AM

Things I learned tonight:

  • One half of 4th grade girls are on a diet
  • In one study, three out of four women stated that they were overweight although only one out of four actually were.
  • Over one half of normal weight white adolescent girls consider themselves fat
  • A study asked children to assign attractiveness values to pictures of children with various disabilities. The participants rated the obese child less attractive than a child in a wheelchair, a child with a facial deformity, and a child with a missing limb.
  • The incidents of anorexia among eight to eleven year olds is said to been increasing rapidly over the past few years

  • Girls develop eating and self-image problems before drug or alcohol problems. There are drug and alcohol programs in almost every school but no eating disorders programs.
  • Anorexia has the highest mortality rate, 20% of any psychiatric diagnosis
  • A study found that adolescent girls were more fearful of gaining weight than getting cancer, nuclear war or losing their parents.
A thought just popped into my head. One Ive never had before: Its so stupid. It doesnt fucking matter if I look fat. I dont fucking care. I want to be happy. I want to have a childhood without thinking Im fat. I want to worry about cancer, nuclear war, and losing my parents more than being fat. Because eventually were all going to die. [Edited by Jen] Im not going to spend my whole life chasing a weight that will never be good enough. I want to change.

I wanted everyone here to learn what I learned.

That is totally true! I must admit I have days where I say to myself I dont care if im fat, sadly I have days where I think the opposite but still, those stats are shocking and really it shouldnt matter what we look like!

This post made me smile.
I'm glad that you've realized that some of these thoughts about "being" or "becoming" fat are irrational and far from reality.
If that picture is of you, I think you look very pretty.
I hope this feeling of hope and change stay with you throughout your recovery.
You deserve every bit of it.
PM me if you need anything, anytime.

You will come to realize that what appears today to be a sacrafice will prove instead to be the greatest investment you ever made.

Sounds like you had a big "wake-up call"--what a nice feeling, yeah? Keep using things like this (information, statistics, etc.) as your ammunition to fight, to keep you moving toward recovery. This is a powerful post that you wrote, maybe even print it out and keep it with you to remind you of what deep-down, you truly believe!

it's so shocking, I must admit but not every person who's into a ED do it just to lose weight, I think it's about coping with your problems as well, I'd say I didn't went into an ED because of being fat or not, I started because of a loss and then depression.
It's not everyone case though
Well done for searching a list of reasons to not have an ED
