Blood in my vomit... - February 22nd 2009, 07:40 AM

Hey guys,
I've had anorexia & bulimia for six years (I'm not self diagnosing, I was diagnosed by a psychologist). For two years I had my eating disorder under control, but last June I relapsed. Anyway, my health is failing because of my anorexic/bulimic tendencies. I've been dehydrated so severely that IVs have failed and I have dizzy/sick spells on a regular basis. Lately my throat has been so sore from purging that it actually wakes me up in the middle of the night and my voice is hoarse constantly. Anyway, tonight I purged a lot and for the first time I found blood in my vomit. I've thought I've tasted it before, but I saw it this time in my vomit and on my finger. I'm not ready to get help again (I'm 18, so my family can't force me into therapy) but I am scared that I've done permanent damage. Should I be concerned about the blood? Aside from the obvious reason, what actually caused my throat to bleed?

Thanks,

Blair

hey hun.. yes i think this is a serious cause for concern. your health matters a lot, and you deserve so much better than to suffer with an eating disorder.. if an avenue is open hun, try to get help? i know how hard it is to have to seek help to stop something you do not really want to let go off, but you know what to do.
is there friend you can talk to about this? it takes courage to seek help again.. but with someone with you, it might be easier?
don't give up hun...
keep us updated. (:

Whether or not you want to be in treatment (and I fully understand, if you're not ready, you're just not ready) you need to get yourself medically checked out. Blood in the vomit can be as 'simple' as a scratch in the throat but as serious as massive internal bleeding. (And simple is really the wrong word there.) It can be life threatening, and/or lead to life threatening conditions. Please make an appointment to see your doctor! If it was a large amount of blood or dark like coffee grounds, forget about your doctor and go to the emergency room. You should most definitely be concerned about this. Even if you're not willing to pursue recovery, you should be taking as much care of your body as you can manage! Stay hydrated as much as possible, get your bloods done regularly, and when something like this happens, don't ignore it - get it checked out.

The blood must be the repetitive action of vomiting that's eating away/burning your esaphagous or the acid of the stomach eating away at the inner lining of your stomach which may cause internal bleeding.
