is ED self harm - February 10th 2011, 09:59 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of eating disorders, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Someone told me that anorexia is a form of self harm. I thought about it and I think I agree.
What's your opinion? Do you think its a form of self harm? Could it be a form of suicide too?

I agree it is. You are purposeful treating your body worse than you should to improve your mental picture of your self image.
I guess it coudld be a form of suicide if someone decided to try to starve to death, but I don't think eating disorders are are an idea for suicide for many people.

And here you are living, despite it all.

Yes, I agree that it is. It sometimes happens to people for similar reason as other types of self-harm too. It's hurting your body deliberately and it's a type of control. Though, I think people can have different reasons for self-harming and for having eating disorders and it depends on the person and what the reasons they're doing it are.

If you're starving yourself to become beautiful then it isn't.
If you're starving yourself to punish yourself it is.

I believe that it is a form of self harm. I binge/purge/starve to become beautiful so to speak but I also do it as a way to cope with life. I am harming myself, intentionally, to deal with life's ups and downs.

I think it is. Cutting, purging, burning, starving yourself, all stems from the same thought process. It all is harmful to your body, and can affect you the same way.

Yes, I'd say it was a form of self-harm. Not sure about a form of suicide though.

It is important to remember that eating disorders are a mental disorder. Therefore, I think that most of the time it wouldn't be considered self harm. I think that because your distorted thinking is, in the way your mind works, logical. So in my case, I am doing something logical and that is good for myself. Through therapy I have come to realize what it is somewhat like (still working on it), but I think that it wouldn't be self-injury. There would have to be a special case in which it would be.

In my head, ED's aren't Self-Injury, but they do fall under Self-Harm, if that makes sense? For me, Self-Injury is thinks like cutting, burning, bone breaking, &c..., and Self Harm is a broader idea, including eating disorders and things like ODing and over exercising...

I think it's definitely self harm regardless of intent. Because weather or not you're meaning to hurt yourself, it is still hurting you.

It could be considered accidental suicide if a person were to die from it.

No matter how you look at it it is a form of self-injury. No matter if your starving your self just to be beautiful (which in that case I wouldn't call it anorexia if that makes sense). You are doing damage to your body I wont neccasarly say on purpose since you have no control at least I know I don't.

Suicide no I don't think so because yes you are slowly killing yourself but thats the key word here SLOWLY in my mind suicide is purposley taking your life the quickest way you can possibly do it if that makes sense not dragging it on and on.

Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are
