Closet-binging? - October 24th 2011, 03:40 AM

I'm not entirely sure how threads always work, so let me know if this isn't right...but I wanted to post a question and hear people's opinions on the subject. What do you think of closet-binging? Do you think it's a legitimate eating disorder? Or something else?

It's definitely an eating disorder, as long as you're meaning binging overall, not just in a closet.

My mother has suffered from binge eating disorder for most of her life, going from binge eating disorder to bulimia, and now she's back just binging. It is a real thing. They have no control, they use food like a drug, receiving complete comfort in food. I have binged before, and it is a scary thing. You lose all control, and feel helpless to food. And the worst part-unlike a drug, food is something you need. You're basically addicted to a neccesity. It's a disorder, and a very hard one to get over, being that my mother has suffered with it for over 40 years. But of course it is always possible with support.

I would say it is most definitely an eating disorder. It stems from the same source as other eating disorders, and like I said, people suffering from it often switch from this one to another. But this is just my opinion. I'm not a doctor, but in my experience, I would say yes.
