Question Why do see myself differently? - November 2nd 2011, 03:36 AM

I have a question. Why do I see myself differently in the mirror then others see me? I see myself as fat, and ugly. Others think I'm skinny but for some reason i know their lying and just trying to make me feel better... Any help?

Hey there,

Sometimes, we have trouble seeing ourselves for how we really are. Everybody sees a different perception of themselves, good or bad. Some people see themselves as much higher than they are, putting themself on a pedestal. However, you happen to see yourself as much lower than how others see you, and in particular, you see yourself as larger than other people do. This can stem from a large amount of things, from low self esteem, to the way you were treated by your family and so on. This sometimes is caused by a disorder called body dysmorphic disorder. However, here on TeenHelp, I cannot diagnose you with that disorder. Only a professional can.

I would recommend you talk to your parents, or a counselor or adult you trust, about how you are feeling and possibly seek professional help. These kind of symptoms, after going on for a long time, may cause you to engage in bad habits, something that can hurt you for the rest of your life. Remember, you are beautiful. Don't let faulty images from mirror tell you otherwise.

I have this same issue, as I'm sure other girls do as well. The reasons why we see ourselves differently then others can greatly vary. Why do you think you see yourself differently? As the saying goes, we are our own biggest critic. Humans are highly critical of themselves, and always have things they'd like to change. Fortunately, others don't see the flaws we see in our self. And most people tend to pick our their flaws rather than their assets. I think it'd be beneficial to you if you started seeing yourself in a new light. Everyday, find two thing you love about your outer self (physical appearance) and two things you love about your inner self (personality). And they can't be the same two things everyday. Really make an active effort to see yourself the way others see you. Try not to focus on the flaws. I know that it's hard, but it can't hurt to try, right? I hope this helped<3
