So Conflicted.. - February 5th 2012, 12:31 AM

So my girlfriend is thinking I'm going back to having anorexic tendencies. But it's not an eating disorder if you have control of it, right? I know I'm not relapsing, because all of this is by choice. I just want to lose some weight. I've lost several pounds these last few days, but that's just because I've been exercising and not eating more than the bare minimum to function. I don't want her to worry, but I don't want to screw up my progress. What do I do?

Honey, from what you're saying, I'm not sure that her worry is unfounded. Feeling in control is often a really huge part of anorexia and bulimia. Alot of times, we don't realize that the decisions we make are part of an addictive mindset. I'm not saying that you relapsed or that you didn't. Just, be careful and listen to people's concerns because often when we are sick the people closest to us see what we can't

Hey Katie,

Honestly, your girlfriend is in the right to worry. It's very hard for people with an eating disorder to "just diet" after suffering for so long. You need to be eating more than the bare minimum to function, we need to eat what is healthy for our bodies and what our bodies actually need. If you have interest in losing weight, I would see a doctor to get an official meal plan and be able to lose weight safely. Otherwise, losing weight in your own way may just turn into a large trigger to start beginning to turn back into your old habits.

Stay safe, I would recommend really thinking about the consequences before really starting to diet again. Good luck!
