Does anyone keep a log of what they eat? - April 29th 2012, 11:45 PM

As the title asks... do you keep a log of the foods and/or drinks you have each day?

I used to when i was trying to lose weight, however it was becoming to much work to keep it up to date. So i just counted calories on my smartphone calculator.

I was encouraged to by my mother, and I did for a while, but it just got too depressing.

I'd rather eat what I know is mostly healthy than obsessively keep track of things.

I'm supposed to for my Crohn's but I don't want to or see a point. I would just lose it anyways, and I have a pretty good idea of what I've eaten everyday without writting it down.

Only when I had to for school and I hated doing it because it was such a pain. I mostly just remember what I've had everyday.

You might want to label this triggering for people with eating disorders. Because a lot of people who have eds do keep track of what they eat how much calories was in each thing and so on.

I have started to do this recently, I feel like I eat a little bit too much rubbish and I want to cut back. So it helps me get a true picture of how I'm getting on.

I don't think this needs a triggering label as it's just a yes or no question. If there were specific mentionings of food, then I would. If anyone would like it labeled, feel free to PM me and I will look into it.

As for myself, I did for my doctor when I was trying to lose a bit of weight and was having no luck. But I realized I ended up eating much more by doing that and was a lot more stressed, so I stopped.

If you are trying to get a healthier way of life, I think eating diaries are perfectly healthy. I think that instead of just recording what food you eat, you should record what time you ate it and what you were doing during that time (watching tv, homework, sleepover, etc.) and if you want to see the nutrition facts too, instead of just writing down the calories don't forget the other two big factors... the fat and sugars in food. I'm not obsessive about my weight but I used to be a little bit bigger than I wanted, not overweight but I just wanted more muscle and do be more toned, so I kept a food journal with all of that information. It taught me that if I'm on the computer or watching tv, I'm going to eat worse, after school I'd always grab something fast and unhealthy to eat, if my homework is stressful then I'd grab junk food to "fix" the issue. Now I try not to eat while watching tv, playing on my phone, using the computer, etc, I try to only eat when I'm sitting at the kitchen table/counter because I'm going to stop eating when I'm full instead of eating until the tv show (or bag of food) is over. Also, I make sure to have healthy snakcs ready to go for when I get home from school and I drink water, chew gum, and take breaks during my homework so I don't get overly stressed and make unhealthy decisions. SInce then, I've seen the results I wanted. The food diary helped me learn what I had to work on.

I do, if I don't then I end up eating way more than I should because I don't realize just how much I've been intaking. It helps me stay on top of things so I stay healthy.

I do sometimes. It helps, actually. Stops me from panicking when I think I've eaten too much - because it'll turn out that I haven't - and also helps me realise when I need to eat more, and again I'm less likely to feel bad about that.

I do, because I'm trying to not over eat. I dont struggle with that stuff really, but I'm just trying to loose weight to get to a healthy range and feel good.

I do, but I'm not supposed to. It makes the restrictive side of my ED behaviours worse.

Re: Does anyone keep a log of what they eat? - May 7th 2012, 02:16 AM

I find a food log to be relatively useless for myself, I was already aware of what I ate before eating, so there was no surprise or insightful information gleaned. I'm currently training, happy with my exercises and weight, so I don't have a desire to even use a food log. I feel it's pointless to worry about what one recently ate because it's too late, the food is already consumed. I'm aware my diet isn't particularly healthy but it could certainly be a lot worse . I watch my weight to ensure I'm not obese but beyond that, I'm fine despite being somewhat overweight. I eat when I'm hungry and stop eating when I'm somewhat or completely full, it's a simple strategy that works perfectly for me.

I don't. I'm just not one of those people who find it needed (my doctor would think otherwise... But hey, my mom thinks it's my pop intake, and I can say, honest to god, that I've only had one today.)- I've been considering it, because it would be nice to honestly see how much I'm eating a day, but I've never considered the "watching my carbs" part of it... Mostly just to see if I eat an okay respectable amount.

Re: Does anyone keep a log of what they eat? - May 10th 2012, 07:14 PM

I try to keep a log for two reasons. First, I have severe food allergies and keeping a log is the only way I make sure I know when I'm eating what so I won't cross-react my foods and make myself sick. Second, I'm trying to lose weight currently so I'm keeping track of my calories. I find the food log useless for the second reason, I really try to track my exercise more with that because that happens to be what I lack in (I eat reasonably well, just am quite lazy). As for the first one, it seems useless until I get sick. So basically I get sick, I do it, say it's useless, give up, and then get sick again. So I always have about a half-complete food log laying around, I'm just bad at entering things in it.

I do, I have for years and years and yeeeears now - but I donít use it so negatively anymore. I used to keep a log to lose weight, now itís just to keep me steady.

Slight but important difference, hey? (=
