I Want To Loose Weight, Tips? - June 11th 2012, 12:01 AM

I don't know how to like, ask about this because I have never really seriously tried to loose weight or thought about it. I have always been pretty comfortable in my body, but I think it's the right time to try and loose some weight. I'm not going to put my exact number, but I am over weight, but not insanely so.

The reason I need tips is because I come from a "bigger" family, so I can't exactly turn to them and my mom doesn't believe in dieting (she says that you lose the weight, stop the diet, and then gain the weight back with some... and I know that I could never keep on a diet.)

So does anyone have any good tips for me? - Also, I know about the exercise thing, but I have a few problems with that, I can't run (I use to use a puffer, and still need it sometimes), and I can't go to a gym (The only other gym except for the school's is pretty far away from my house and I'm not comfortable being there). But I can walk (I actually love to walk now that there is no snow), and the pool is pretty okay (I still get hives, but as long as I take my med's it will be okay.)

I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand fucking times
That I'm OK, that I'm fine, that it's all just in my mind
But this has got the best of me, and I can't seem to sleep
It's not 'cause you're not with me, it's cause you never leave

I would recommend going to a doctor or dietician to see if it is healthy for you to lose weight, and then getting tips to do it healthfully. Having never had to think about losing weight that's the only advice I can give you.
Good luck.

^^' Yea, it's something that I'm adding to my list of things I have to talk to the doctor about. I'm pretty sure that it is healthy, since we've talked about it before. EDIT: ^^' Just figured out that my (ultimate) goal would have put me really close to the "low" end, so I'm happy now that I know pretty much that my "trying it out" goal is actually the amount that is healthy for me to lose.

Re: I Want To Loose Weight, Tips? - June 11th 2012, 03:02 AM

By a puffer I'm assuming you mean an asthma inhaler?

If that's the case, it's possible to get something called a preventer, and after a few weeks of this, you need your emergency inhaler less. However, as someone with mild asthma, I found that taking salbutrimol (the emergency inhaler one) before I went for a run did the trick for me, as salbutrimol relaxes the thingies that cause asthma attacks for up to 4 hours. Meaning that with the right treatment, you probably could run, but not right away. It takes time for the preventer drug to build up in your system, but once it's there, running becomes a viable option

Anywho, you said you like swimming. Swimming is a wonderful form of exercise, it's low impact, and teaches you to control your breathing, and it's great cardio at the same time - we all know cardio helps burn fat (but so does pretty much any exercise.)
There's also cycling - less impact than running, so less torture on your lungs. You still may need to use an inhaler, but it shouldn't be as bad as when you're running. That's if you have a bike handy.

Then there's the old standards, press-ups, sit-ups, and squats - those marvellous bodyweight exercises that don't require a gym. And if you're strong enough, chin-ups and pull-ups are great as well, and if you have a bar you can do chin-ups on, then you can also do leg-lifts! If you want a whole heap of bodyweight exercises (I'm a gymnastics coach), PM me and I'll send you a bunch.

As for food - diet is a dirty word. Everybody knows the rules around healthy eating (at least, I assume they do, although I recently heard that many American children think pizza is a vegetable, but that's not the point), and it's fairly simple to make some basic swaps - you know, skim milk instead of full-fat, a piece of fruit instead of a biscuit, cereal or eggs for breakfast instead of whatever else you have, and brown bread instead of white bread - they're all small things that make a difference in the long run.
Oh - biggest nutrition thing I can think of - DRINK WATER! Fizzy drinks are ok say, once a week, and juice is ok say, once a day, but both are very high in sugar, and realistically, the only fluids your body requires when you're not sick are water and milk. =] Oh, and there's nothing wrong with hot drinks - a teaspoon of sugar in a cup of tea or coffee is negligible to the 5+ teaspoons of sugar in fruit juice or fizzy.

And the only other thing I can think of nutrition-wise is portion sizes. Many people are eating healthy things, just in the wrong amounts! If you already eat healthy, but you're maintaining the same weight, it may be worth looking at your portion sizes. Even something as simple as serving dinner on a side-plate (we call them bread and butter plates, nfi what you guys call them) instead of a dinner plate can make a difference - and adjusting your portion size is something you can do without your family getting upset about "diets". Often we eat too much simply because it's there (I know I do), and if there's less food on our plates, we eat less, and then realise later that we're just as satisfied.

Well, I hope this was some help. Good luck, remember, results take time.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else is saying. Since you don't have access to a gym, you can always go on youtube and look for workout videos. If you don't have any dumbbells, you should think about saving money to get a set. As for nutrition, it's all about portion control. You need to get an adequate amount of all the food groups. Drinking water is one of the most important things. If all you drink is sodas and nothing else, then you wouldn't see much weight loss. Our body is about 60%-75% water, so water is very important. You should aim to about 8 cups of water a day.

Re: I Want To Loose Weight, Tips? - June 11th 2012, 08:41 PM

Thanks, and yea. I don't use it anymore, even through I should. I haven't heard of a preventer before at all, and I think I'll talk to my doctor about it (as long as I'm not running I usually last without it, so that's one reason I don't...)

^^ I'm hopefully going to be teaching my brother to ride his bike, so I'll probably get a lot of that done.

I know the rules of healthy eating to an extent, and I don't consider "pizza" a vegetable (... I don't even like pizza that much). I don't know what type of milk we have, since I don't really drink milk- but I get my calcium elsewhere, plus we only buy brown bread (I actually prefer it over white bread.)

^^' I don't think we have side plates, we have normal plates and then mini-plates. I have to agree with that, I sometimes do, but I've been getting better at that. - Thanks.

@ Cats315, youtube wouldn't work for me, our internet is fast twice a month for a few days (internet connection sucks here.) I don't think I can afford dumbbells, especially with a school trip coming up, but we do have these balls that do the same thing (My mom goes through plenty of "we should all lose weight" phases, and is in one now, but never really does a lot, nor is she keen on me wanting to do that.) Thanks for the advice.

Clean up your diet. It helps a lot. You also want a calorie deficit so find your BMR and take away 500 from that and you've got yourself a good deficit.

Lift weights much more helpful than pure cardio because muscle uses more energy than fat. You can do cardio on the days that you don't do weights, or do cardio after your weight lifting session because it puts your body in a fat burning state.

As said earlier, cut out the fizzy drinks. There's so much unnecessary stuff in them lol I haven't drank them for a few weeks now and I don't feel like I'm missing much to be honest.

Hey, guess why i smile a lot... because it's worth it

People who don't want you to think are never your friends.

I kind of get but kind of don't get the first thing you said, like figure out how many calories I eat and take 500 away? (... Before today I have never heard "deficit"... thank god for dictionaries)

I'll try weight lifting (... something I have never done, due to the fact I don't take gym- I get hives whenever I enter my schools gym.), and I think I can cut out fizzy drinks, I have been doing that more and more, since my mom is getting on my back over drinking pop and stuff, luckily I'm not much of a juice drinker, so I'm generally drinking water.

There are some sites where you put your weight, height and age and it show how much calories you - probably - burn per day. You also say if you're sedentary, slightly active, very active, etc.
Then all you have to do is keep track of what you eat during the day. Keeping a journal is a good option.
