Bug Bites? - July 5th 2012, 05:25 PM

On Saturday night I noticed my leg was insanely itchy and had little red raised bumps on it, so I thought it was a nettle sting and put vinegar on it. That... was pretty excruciating and we (my parents, brother, and I) then realised maybe a bug had attacked me. I've been putting Germolene on it pretty much every day because it itches so much but the little red lumps still look exactly the same and they still itch, is there anything else you think I could be doing?
I need to go to the doctor on Monday anyway so is it worth bringing up if they're still there? I've been bitten/stung by bugs before and usually they've gone by now.

Well sure it is worth bringing up with your doctor. Anything that can relate to your health should be brought up, even if it is something that you think is small. In any event your doctor can give you ways to stop the itching or make the bumps go away.

Now, since I can't see your bumps I don't know whether they are similar to something I had, but have you been using something new lately, like a new type of laundry detergent or soap? You may be allergic to that. Since I have eczema, dry skin can be a problem, my doctor actually told me that dry skin can do this, so maybe try lotioning? She also suggested getting a fresh razor to shave if yours are getting older since it may be the bacteria. But of course since I'm not a doctor and don't know what yours look like I can't say for sure that any of these things can be true for you.

But in any case, sure you can see what your doctor says, it's worth it to see if anything can be done.

Why are you using Germolene if you think they are bug bites? As far as I know, that is only used to 'sterilize' cuts and open wounds. It might be better to use some Calamine lotion/cream, or Hydrocortisone cream. That will help the itching, which will help the swelling.

You might also want to try some Ibuprofen for the inflammation (which is what bug bites are), and an ice pack which will numb it, as well as help the inflammation and temporarily 'freeze' the histamine from the bug bite.

All of this will also work if it is a rash, as suggested above.
