Ingrown toenail :( - July 5th 2012, 07:36 PM

I'm 99% sure I have an ingrown toenail. My big toe has been hurting all day. I just had a bath and realised that the side of my toe is swollen (it looks like a lump) and my nail is at a funny angle It looks an awful lot like this:

but not quite as red.

I looked online and I may need to have my nail cut off by a doctor -_____- yay.

I'll see my doctor about it next week if it doesn't improve.

Has anyone else ever had an ingrown toenail? Should I go to the doctors sooner?

Re: Ingrown toenail :( - July 6th 2012, 12:09 PM

I haven't had one that severe. I have one nail that I have to trim every few days to prevent this.

I do know you can try to do it yourself, but if it is already too embedded, then you don't want to try to mess with it. Sometimes the doctor will cut the skin around it back, trim the nail, and tell you to keep it trimmed. However, in severe cases, a doctor will remove the nail entirely.

I would suggest icing it and using an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen will help a bit, thought Tylenol works well for the pain too) to reduce as much swelling as possible and to help with the pain. You can also soak your feet in warm water 3-4 times a day. Add some soap or some sort of antibacterial agent as well. This helps to ensure it is as clean as possible to prevent infection. Otherwise, keep the foot dry throughout the day, as sweat and water will irritate it more.

I've also heard of a procedure that sounds quite painful, such as rolling up a cotton ball, lifting the toenail up, and stuffing it under to elevate it off the skin. You are welcome to research that, but I will not suggest it as I'm not sure what all is involved with that.

As long as the area does not turn colors (green, yellow, black, blue) you should be fine to wait. You want to look for any white or yellow puss that might be coming from the area, any of the colors mentioned above, and your pain level. If you have any of these, and the pain is disturbing sleep or walking, you may want to go sooner.

I agree with escape_thereal_world. I know of a girl that went to highschool with me who had an ingrown toenail and she had to get it removed, meaning the whole nail. I thinkI don't know how severe your case is, but if it isn't that severe, then you could probably go to a doctor and they could tell you what to do at home. If it is a severe case, then you would have to have the whole toenail removed.

I suggest that you take some anit-inflammatory medication( like Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve, Advil, etc) to help make it less painful. Meanwhile, you could ice it or soak your toe in a big bowl of epsom salt. Make sure the water is hot and the epsom salt is somewhat dissolved, but not completely. It will help soothe the area that hurts and it will help reduce the swelling a little bit.

But if it starts turning colors, just like what escape_thereal_world said, then that is when you should go to the doctors immediately. It might be a sign of infection and at this time, more than likely the whole toenail would have to be removed. If they have any walk in clinics near where you live, then I suggest you try to go to one of those.

Re: Ingrown toenail :( - July 6th 2012, 03:20 PM

As the others have said already, salt water 4 times a day usually for a half hour each, certain natural oils and anti-bacterial powders or Betadine.
My brother has had the operation done 3 times but he had a wedge resection done and it was very painful, and did not heal properly, prompting him to have it done another time. I had the Phenolisation procedure done, which was just 3 local anaesthetic at the base of the nail.
I just had mine operated on, my surgeon cut both sides at the back of the nail, and I am guessing he cut the sides of the nail out that were ingrown and then he cauterized the nail bed so that it would never grow back, then he sealed the wound by burning and stitching the skin back together. Having the entire nail removed is an extreme and should only need to be done under very bad circumstances. So if you want to avoid a lot of pain, I would go see somebody about it before it get's bad, because once it is infected it is very hard to cure. And if you get the bad procedure recommended perhaps get a second opinion from a different doctor. Also, make sure the person performing the treatment has a degree in surgery, my brother had his general practitioner do it the first time and as said, had the more painful procedure done and also needed it repeated. But then again, mine wasn't too severe after 4 weeks of antibiotics, so just make sure to see somebody, home surgery is dangerous and often once infected nothing will work to cure it, even then the nail is already in there... Prevention, Prevention, Prevention! In future, cut the nail straight across, not at an angle or down the sides or anything, and don't cut them too low. Any questions pm me.

Not salt water! That will sting if there is any cut into the skin. It will sterilize it, yes, but it will be so sore.

Epsom salt or any soap would be better.

I've had quite a few in my days. Always always soak with solution of half cup vinegar and water about 2-3 times a day. Sounds funny but I've been to doctors and specialists for years for this. Also bedatine solution works. I know it's ugly but try not to wrap it or wear closed shoes and socks too often. If you do, wrap it loosely with some cream. Sometimes they heal on their own and some need further procedures. I have one wierd stubby toenail and one that looks perfectly normal but both were operated on and needed acid on them to stop the nail from growing into the sides of my skin. Haha good luck!

I had many ingrown toenails. They all hurt like hell. You shouldn't wait a long time with these or they'll get really infected and it'll be all bad. The best way to get them away is to go to the doctors and get it chemically removed so it'll never comeback again. Downside part of it is that that side of the nail will never grow back.

Since it has been two weeks since the OP last posted, I am going to close this. OP, if anything new develops or it worsens, feel free to ask to have this reopened, or just create a new thread.
