Sunflower seed shell. - July 25th 2012, 04:22 AM

Are they dangerous to eat? And if so... How?

I only ask because ( could get gross here ) when I go number two there is lots of blood. I eat sunflower seeds with the shell and have been lately.

And I'm really sorry if that was gross..

Edit: I've also been having unbearable cramping if that helps. I'm not about to start my period nor do I get cramping ThAT bad.

Hey Lynds,

In small quantities, eating with he shell is not harmful. But if you eat a lot, it can tear up your rectum a bit when the slivers do not completely digest. I'd recommend taking a break from them, and if you continue getting cramps within the next few days, see a doctor, and in the future, try your best to either spit the shells out or chew them very well.

Traci said it best.
For the most part, they aren't considered dangerous. But there are times where you can't fully digest them, so they can cause damage. This is usually not a big deal, though it is best to be avoided.

Take a break, see if it gets better within a week. If your symptoms worsen or persist after you have stopped eating the seeds, definitely see your doctor. Though, you can see one now too to be on the safe side.

Take care!
