Angry Ugh what's wrong with me?? - September 4th 2012, 08:47 AM

Woke up today with hugely swollen neck glands, a sore throat, a head that feels like heavy cotton wool, and a general Iwanttostayinbed icky feeling. I seem to get this a few times a year and it always seems to be at inconvenient times like before my debs (prom) and my 21st birthday....and it's my graduation ceremony tomorrow. I have a busy day ahead (and tomorrow obviously) so I need to know how to make this go away. The Internet won't tell me what it could be but I feel crappy. And no time to go to the doctor. Help??

It could be a bug or virus, but since it seems recurring, I'd recommend you go to the doctor soon in case it is something serious.

For now, all I can recommend is trying to treat the symptoms. Rest while you can, so that you feel as good as possible for graduation ceremony. Drink water regularly and stay hydrated, eat regular meals but try and keep the foods simple (I know that helps me feel better when I feel rough), soothers or cough sweets might help your throat, or ice cream (best sick food ever!), painkillers like paracetamol might help your head, and ibuprofen might help reduce the pain from your glands. Drinking hot water with lemon juice and honey in it is also a soothing remedy for throats.

I hope some of that helps and that you feel better soon.

Often times people are more susceptible to colds or flus at certain times during the year. I tend to always get sick right before Christmas. Every year, like clock-work, I get ill the week before Christmas and stay ill through the next couple weeks.

It's generally because I am so busy around that time, and it's cold out then too, which lead to a weakened immune system. This might be what is happening with you since you seem to be very busy and stressed (good or bad).

Drink A LOT of water. It really does help. When I was very sick this last time, I drank about one full cup 8oz) every 2 hours. I felt pretty good once I got through my third cup.

Hot tea with honey is great too. The tea has antioxidants which help boost your immune system and the honey helps soothe sore throats and boosts immune system as well as gives you natural energy.

For the swollen glands, take some ibuprofen and use an ice pack (wrapped in a towel to protect your skin). Do NOT use heat. This will make them feel worse and become more swollen.
