As if things couldn't get worse, they did... - October 9th 2012, 12:02 PM

I am sitting up in bed, leaning on a stack of pillows, it's 10:59PM here so yeah. Anyway, I got this sharp pain in my side, down the bottom of my back. It's still throbbing but when it burst into pain I felt like I was going to vomit, I was gasping for breath as I hunched over, trying to massage the pain away. Is this normal? I mean, it made tears come to my eyes it was that bad and ouch, touching it hurts too :/

Any suggestions, other than go to a doctor which I will not do for reasons unknown even to me right now.

It could have been how you were sitting caused a nerve to get pinched. This can cause excruciating pain, even causing you to sit/stand awkwardly for several days.

Often times, a heating pad (or ice, depending on what seems to work for you) helps. Taking Ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory can help. See if either of those help.

If not, or if it gets worse or hot to touch, you do need to see a doctor. Whether at a free clinic, womens clinic, or a GP, it needs to be seen. Sudden sharp pains are nothing to mess with if they last awhile. It could be something simple like muscle related, or it could be something as severe as appendicitis or a kidney issue.

Watch for hot spots, worsening pain, frequent urination/unable to urinate, blood in urine, or fever. All of these show signs of a kidney or appendix issue.
