Question Swollen/Puffy under eye - October 17th 2012, 02:56 PM

Hey there everybody

So my eyes look like the right one on this picture, but more severe and both eyes. (the underneath swollen-ness and deep creases)
I've tried cucumber slices, eye de-puffiness stuff, and an hour and a half of sleep. I woke up looking like this, and had to stay home from school because of it. It happens occasionally and I would like to know why or at least a could method of how to get rid of it.

<- the eye on this side

Thank you so much!

Webmd has a great article on possible causes.

It could be seasonal allergies, a cold, sinus infection, a night of crying before sleep, or a lot of salty food for dinner!

One thing to try is to try sleeping on your back with an extra pillow under you. Sleeping on your side or stomach allows fluids to collect under your eyes.
You can also try a neti pot which can help flush out allergens (be careful with this and use PURIFIED or bottled water as using tap water up your nasal can cause infections, including serious infections like flesh-eating bacteria).

Take a look at the site. Hopefully it helps give you some ideas to prevent this from happening.

Of course, I also suggest a doctor visit if it happens frequently.

Thank you so much Kelly! I do sleep on my side and stomache..but I don't have any allergies, didn't cry and I don't think I ate anything really salty. But I will totally look at WebMD!

Well, even without having any allergies, if you are in an area with high pollen this can cause people with NO allergies to have reactions. Same with if your bed hasn't been washed recently, all the stuff collected on it can cause anyone's nose to become stuffy, or in your cause under eyes to become puffy

You can also try NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) such as Ibuprofen and applying an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the swollen area. Washing with cold water and pat drying might help as well.
