Ankle and knee pain. - November 12th 2012, 09:43 PM

A couple of years ago I injured my knee in my karate class (never figured out exactly what kind of injury it was) when I first hurt it and still today there are days that I can't put any weight on it because it hurts too bad. This would happen nightly when it first got hurt and now it just happens occasionally. Even when I can walk on it, it still hurts all the time. I do wear a brace on it because my doctor told me to. Since I injured my knee both of my ankles have also started hurting pretty constantly and not supporting weight on some days. I wear braces on my ankles too because of this. When I don't wear my braces (which are just the kind you get at a wal-mart) then my ankles and knee get super swollen if I do simple things like walk around, lay on the floor with my legs in the air, crawl around playing with my little cousins, etc. Is there anything I can do to lessen the pain? Should I see another doctor for a second opinion of these injuries? Thanks!

If all your doctor has said is to wear a brace, then I think you should definitely get another opinion.
You may have torn the ligament (I can't remember what it is it's something behind your knee) which can cause a lot of pain. Because of this injury to your knee, you may have put stress on your ankles in order to walk without pain in your knee, which has in turn caused damage to your ankles.

If your ankles are swollen, ice them and keep them well elevated.

Pain medication isn't really a long term solution and it sounds like you've had this for a while. If you have damaged your knee badly you may need minor key hole surgery to stabilise it. Your doctor may also recommend physio.. I'm not really sure what else.. someone else will probably provide a better answer! I just think another visit to the doctor is required!

Alright! We have a health center at my school with a nurse and a doctor working there. I will go there tomorrow and see what they say I should do. If they don't provide a better answer then I will make another appt with my doctor to have it looked at again and see what we can do.
