Sit ups? - April 16th 2009, 01:20 AM

What is the correct way to do sit ups???

My gym teacher in secondary school said to keep a straight back and sit all the way up, then lower yourself back down again, but an old acquaintance of mine who played rugby said that sitting right up damages your coccyx.

So what is the correct way?

Moving this to General Health to be with the rest of the exercise-y type threads.

Andddd check it out: Personal Training Workout Tips: How to do Sit Ups. That video looks pretty solid, and he shows you a few ways how to not do sit ups, which I feel is quite helpful. I, personally, mainly do crunches and the things where you're on your back and you raise and lower both legs. Good ab muscle burn.

Usually put your feet under something like the small gap of a couch or even dig your heels into the ground and do them. Usually I cross my arms in front of me placing my palms on each shoulder and sit up until my elbows touch my knees and go back down till my shoulder blades lay flat on the ground.

Pretty much as long as the only stress you feel is in your abs, then you're good. If you feel pain or stress in your back, you're doing it improperly and it could damage your back. Also, if you do them slowly they will be more effective.

This is kinda random, but I really like doing bridges. They're kinda hard to describe but you lay on your side and form a right angle with your arm and holde yourself up. You do it on both sides. You can also use both arms and do it on your front. Hahahaha, sorry that was a horrible description.

to be most effective keep your feet on the floor but dont put any thing on them, keeping them down forces you to work your abs vs thighs and then either start from the top and slowly go to a third of the way down pause and return to top or start from the bottom and go a third of the way up and return to bottom

Yeah, I do those too, the laying on your back and lifting your legs straight up, I think they're really good
