Question Weird Sleep Issue - March 14th 2013, 07:57 PM

For the past few years I have been affected by this weird sleep issue that is pretty hard to explain, but here goes. Sometimes if I sleep in later than usual I only...half-awake? Basically, my eyes open and I can look around, but I can not speak or move any part of my body, even something as small as my finger. These episodes can last for a few seconds to hours. The only way I can get out of these stupors is if I try and make myself go back to sleep and hope and pray that I fully awake the next time, or I have to muster up all my strength and try and roll myself off my bed to snap myself together.

I haven't noticed any side-effects from this except that in times when my face is buried in my pillow and it happens, I tend to feel like I'm going to suffocate and that leads to panic attacks.

So has anyone even heard of this happening? Is it common and if so, how do I stop it?

Actually, it's called sleep paralysis and it's very common, it sounds like it's unusual for it to last for hours though. If it scares you, you can see your doctor, but in most cases people don't need treatment unless it's caused by an underlying condition. Try This Article for more information.

I do believe you must view a medical professional since that is not standard,Should your medical doctor didn't recognize, and then inform the psych consultant

Yes, that sounds like sleep paralysis. I've experienced it a few times and it's quite scary, so I can only imagine what it's like to have that happen so frequently. I have a friend that gets it a lot. I would definitely talk to your doctor to see if there's anything that can be done, or jsut to make sure everything's ok, because to be honest, it's not that normal!
