Subconcsious movement of limbs - March 16th 2013, 08:44 AM

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if any of you might know what this is. When I'm sitting down, I violently shake one or both of my legs. I usually have the leg balancing on the toes, and I allow it to jerk up and down. I've realised that some people find it quite annoying as well.

Now, I'm not a very well-coordinated person in general. I sometimes make other small movements with my arms, usually not realising I'm doing it. I tend to tremble and jitter a lot as well, not even necessarily when I'm nervous, but also at other times. So, is there something wrong with me, or is it normal?

Thanks in advance.

As for your leg jerking up and down mine does that too, it's only if you have it balancing on your toes a certain way right? You're probably just pinching a nerve causing a reflex action.
The trembling could be caused by a huge amount of things, it could be nothing, it could be an imbalance of electrolytes, it could be from any medication you might be taking, etc.. If this problem is troubling to you see your doctor, they would probably do some blood tests and if all comes out good they might refer you to a neurologist.

Thanks for the reply! It's usually when I have my leg balanced on my toes, but it happens at other times as well. For example, right now I'm sitting on a recliner chair with my legs out in front, one crossed over the other below the knees, and at any one time I'm subconsciously shaking one or both of my feet. I'm either wiggling my toes or moving my foot over and back. It's usually a case where I do it for a while and then become aware of it after a few minutes. Thanks for the advice about the trembling as well. I might look into further before I do anything.

I do this too, I find myself doing but only really notice when people point it out. I can control it if I think about it, I don't think people usually have a reason for it, it can be through being nervous or anxious, just having a lot of energy and sometimes it's just a habit. If it's something you've always done it can help you to relax.
I wouldn't worry about it

I know there's something my mum calls restless leg syndrome this where when sitting down you cannot keep your leg still. I know I tend to suffer from restless leg syndrome when nervous. Perhaps this is the same for you ? Of course if this is worrying a lot it might be an idea to get it checked out by your Dr but I honestly don't think its anything for you to worry about.

Charli: It can be the same for me as well, my mother often points it out and I don't realise I'm doing it until she does so. Thanks for your reply!

Lydia: I've heard of RSL before, and I have worried about the possibility of me having the condition. It can be brought on by nervousness at times, and the shaking is often more severe when I feel nervous. Thanks for the advice.
