Question What's wrong with my scalp? - August 19th 2013, 12:56 PM

My scalp itches all the time and when I scratch it white flakes fall off it. Also when I scratch it I get a white powder under my fingernails. What's wrong with my scalp and what should I do about it? Any advice is appreciated!

Could it be dandruff?

If so nothing to worry about, perfectly normal, some people get it, not a big deal. There are shampoos you can try to help with it! The article I linked explains it all.

The most likely cause is what Megan suggested, dandruff. Dandruff is a dryness of the scalp which causes the flakiness to occur. Whatever shampoo you're using it may not be suitable for you, try something that effectively moisturises and keeps moisture retained in your hair and on your scalp. If you feel after trying a different type of shampoo or even more than one type and/or brand and the problem persists, see your doctor and check for eczema.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else is saying. It is probably most likely dandruff that you are experiencing. What type of shampoo are you using? Maybe stop using the shampoo you are currently using now and try a different shampoo like Selsun Blue or Head and Shoulders.

We're not doctors, so we can't formally diagnose you, but from experience, it is most likely you have dandruff. Maybe you can go to a doctor that specializes in this area to just get a second opinion.

I agree with dandruff.

One thing to do is maybe make sure you're getting all the shampoo and conditioner out adequately, or try a new type of conditioner entirely. I use T-Sal sometimes to help my scalp, but you just start out by trying a different brand and/or scent to see if that helps. I personally use Tresseme.

If that doesn't work you can speak with your doctor and they can see if it's eczema or if you're allergic to something that may be in the shampoo or conditioner.

I have a very similar problem. I don't have dandruff. I have what they call residue. It's really hard to wash all of my shampoo and conditioner out of my hair, so it stays in there and becomes a powdery white kind of thing. If you don't end up having dandruff, you might just have the same problem as me. Try using a clarifying shampoo once a week or as needed. It works pretty well for me
