Is it bad sleeping on the couch? - October 4th 2016, 03:51 PM

I have been sleeping on the couch lately because I just fall asleep on the couch but I noticed that my chest muscles has been hurting me. Is the couch causing it?

I'm not going to say for sure that this is causing it because I am not a doctor but I will say it could be. Sometimes when we sleep in certain positions we wake up with sore muscles or generally not feeling great due to the position we are sleeping or the surface. So if you're sleeping in an uncomfortable position you could be getting sore?

Probably. Couches may feel comfy but they don't usually support a person napping there for several hours appropriately.

It may be that you are sleeping in an awkward position on the couch, causing you to feel muscular pain. However, if you notice the pain at other times, or when you are not sleeping on the couch, it's best to get it checked out.

There's a reason couches and even sleeper sofas are not meant to be slept on regularly. Your spine does not align correctly on them because of the way a couch can sink in at certain places or due to the unsupportive foam bed made for sleeper sofas. Even the best couches sink in when someone lays on them. Usually in the center, so your head, shoulders, and legs will be going in an upward direction while your midsection remains lower. Basically your body is in a u-shape and even if only slightly it can cause pain.

I know couches can be comfy to rest on and it might be hard to will yourself out of one to get in a proper bed, but your body will thank you for it. I slept on a sofa for quite a few months every night after my brother moved in and I experienced quite a lot of chest, shoulder, and back pain. Sleeping on my $80 Amazon mattress after that felt like heaven.

I would really try to sleep in an actual bed if you can because it should help. If the pain keeps persisting afterwards then you should consult a doctor.
