I'm allergic to something but what? - December 24th 2016, 09:49 PM

Yesterday afternoon I woke up itching like crazy. I started to develop these little white bumps that looked just like misqueto bites which I later found out were hives. All day yesterday I was on and off itchy mostly everywhere. I changed my sheets and clothes but it didn't seem to help much. Today I'm less itchy but the hives still come and go. Both my mom and my friend who's an EMT said it was most likely an allergic reaction to something. I've been home from university for about 4 days now and nothing changed. I just developed hives out of nowhere. What could I possibly be allergic to? I have absolutely no clue what's triggering this. I'd go to the doctor but it's Christmas Eve and tomorrow is Christmas so.... yea...

Have you changed the washing detergent? Sometimes clothes or bedding can irritate us if the washing detergent has changed (whether that's a choice you made or whether the company changed something in the detergent). Other than that, it could be many other things like soap, make-up, lotions etc.

To treat the hives, I'm wondering if you have or can get a hold of some piriton (chlorphenamine maleate) or some other form of antihistamine, perhaps from a pharmacy? It should help to reduce the inflammation and itching.

^^ I've been using the same Tide I always use at home and university. And same for soap, I've been using Dove all my life. I use the same shampoo and I haven't worn makeup since I got home. I can't think of anything I've changed or done different. Maybe after Christmas I'll see if I can pick something up! I just don't want to take medication without doctors approval. Thank you tho!

Have you been sick recently? I got hives in reaction to a virus once.

Hey there,

I have this happen sometimes. I have yet to figure out what is causing it but I have found that benadryl helps alleviate the symptoms and my misery. I would also suggest that you get in with your doctor and talk to them about this. They might be able to do a test that might let them know what it is you are allergic too.

Best of luck!

Maybe you are allergic to something like a scent that has recently been introduced into the house, a new pet, a a cleaning product your family started using (e.g. Windex, Lysol, or a carpet cleaner)

Any new clothes, and if so what are they made out of? I know that a few years back I was gifted a really nice sweater for Christmas but I couldn't wear it because it was made of a material that I turned out to be allergic to and would get hives.

I also sometimes get stress-hives, so are you stressed?

Update: After about two days the hives/itching went away completely. I didn't make any changes yet but they just disappeared. I throughly clean my room tho so perhaps it was a dust allergy? Either way I'm okay now but if they ever come up again I'll definitely see my doctor. But thanks for your help everyone, I'll be in the lookout for anything that might have caused this.

Glad to hear that the hives/itching went away! It could have been a dust allergy, and though I hope it doesn't happen again, it's good that you'll go to your doctor if it does. I'll go ahead and close this thread now since the problem has been resolved, but PM me if you want the thread to be re-opened, or feel free to create a new one.
